Hashimoto’s is what I was thinking about when I suggested a physical. I’m not a doctor- but I know a couple of young people who have been diagnosed with it, and I don’t think it’s the first thing a parent or physician think of when a kid is struggling in college.
Another option for potential GPA busting classes is to take them either pass/fail or at a CC over the summer and transfer the credits in. My D took math p/f and did FL at CC between her freshman and sophomore years.
I gave my daughter one semester to fix it-- she didn’t. She cried and said she loved it there. I said that is great but the purpose is education. She said the school didn’t kick me out and I said well I am.
She went into how she was trying her best (I didn’t believe her and still don’t years later) - but I said. It doesn’t matter — If you are trying your best and this is the best you can show for it, you don’t belong there, if you are not trying your best then you don’t belong there.
On the topic of transferring while on academic probation, many four year colleges including your local state school require that transfer applicants be in good academic standing. Students who leave college while on probation or are suspended need to find a school with “open admissions.” Community colleges often are open admission. I wouldn’t assume without checking the transfer requirements online that the local state college will accept a student on academic probation. Students can attend a CC, get better grades, then transfer to a third college (or back to the first) once in good standing.
Hi again, thank you, everyone for the excellent advice and sharing your experiences and wisdom. The final tally for his fall semester ended up being a mixed bag (the previously mentioned F and 3 Bs) It was enough to get him off probation and now we’re discussing the long range plan. The STEM courses are by far the weakest, but as one respondent said, poor study skills/time management may be a root problem. He seems to have a new interest in a humanities major (those grades were much stronger) so we have a plan and agreement for the Spring semester, and if he doesn’t reach a minimum goal (3.0) he’s done at selective SLAC and coming back to state u or CC… or perhaps an internship at SCA which seems like a very cool option. In any event, thank you all VERY much for making me feel less-alone and armed with some excellent wisdom!
