Hi! I am considering accepting my offer of admission to University of St Andrews, but I have a few questions. First, if I were to receive my first degree in my intended major, International Relations, from a university outside the US (St Andrews), would that at all affect (especially negatively) my chances at acceptance to a prestigious employer or graduate school? How do US schools treat that sort of stuff?

PS. I am US citizen - So I would be studying as international student at St Andrews

PPS. I have also heard that US students aren't able to study abroad (outside of St Andrews - in other European Countries) because study-abroad programs are subsidized by the EU and the EU refuses to fund non-nationals. I do hold citizenship in Russia, though, but I guess that's not much help when it comes to the EU. I was hoping to hear from any alumni or any other experts.

US employers/Grad schools treat a graduate from St. Andrews as they would a US college graduate. Its a good school, and International Relations there is one of the best majors. All US Undergrad Colleges were actually based on St. Andrews. There are plenty of US students studying in Oxford/Cambridge as well Trinity Dublin and Edingburgh. None of the them give financial aid – you have to pay yourself, or find outside private scholarships. Other countries do accept US students, but the trouble with them would be the language barrier. From what I know, St. Andrews does not give scholarships to US students – their fees fall into several categories – UK fees, EU fees, US fees (most expensive). Obviously its more competitive for Uk, and then EU students.

Thanks ‘mhmm’ about the employer/grad school question! My other question in the PPS was more about study abroad “programs” (for instance the types many american colleges offer to their students during their junior year). I have heard that these programs (to send St Andrews students to study in other countries for a semester or year) are not available to US students (but I’m not entirely sure on this info and so far have not heard back from the school).

Sort of OT question: University of St Andrews or Tufts University for undergrad International Relations (in terms of academics/prestige - because the entire education in a different place seems a little distracting from which is the better undergrad school)
