An "Unlikely" Letter

This is a new experience. My D received an email that she will "unlikely" get into the nursing major she applied for and has the opportunity to change her major if she still wants to be considered for admission. It's not a rejection, but it is a bummer! She has received acceptances to other equally tough schools (for nursing), and she did select a second major option on her application, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't just accept her to that major if they did not want to give her admission to nursing.

Anyone else get an email like this? Here is part of the dialogue:

"Due to the Nursing department receiving a significant number of applications this year, our acceptance rate for this major will likely fall below 20% (our overall acceptance rate as an institution is approximately 45%). While it is possible that you could still be admitted into Nursing prior to April 1st, it is unlikely given the competitiveness of the applicant pool.

Because we believe you are a good candidate for TCNJ, we would like to offer you an opportunity to be considered for admission under a different academic program of study. A select group of qualified students are being given this option, and we encourage you to take it seriously by investigating an alternate area of study that you find exciting, challenging, and that you will pursue with great passion while here at TCNJ. "

Well at least they are giving her a choice. I read another post on CC where for out of staters, the U of Texas assumed you wouldn’t want to attend if you didn’t get your first choice major and just didn’t admit you.

My S got the same exact email only for the Computer Science major. Same wording and everything. He has also been accepted at other schools as a Comp. Sci. major but TCNJ is his first choice. He did chose an alternate program of study, which I believe is still available. The email stated there are no guarantees he can get into the Comp Sci program if he gets admitted into an alternate program of study. Did yours say that too for Nursing? We have been struggling with this all weekend. Not sure what what we will do. We were ready for “yes”, we were ready for “no”, we were even ready for a “maybe” (waitlist), but never saw this one coming!

@njmom80–same with us. We pondered what to do…stay with the nursing major or pick another one (even though D did list her second choice already on app). But D decided to just keep as is because she has been accepted to 5 direct entry nursing programs already (more? I cant remember LOL!), and she really wants to be a nurse, so TCNJ will just end up off the list. But it would have been a real contender.

@njmom80-- Do you mind sharing your son’s stats? I’m curious what kind of scores and grades you need to be accepted as a Comp Sci major at TCNJ.

and the verdict is…ACCEPTED!
