Andover Admission Chances

O.k. so a couple of days ago, I got a letter from Andover saying I should apply to their school. Apparently, they liked my AMC scores. My freshman grades were o.k. I had one B+ and one A- but the rest were As. My sophomore grades sucked. I only had one A- in english and the rest were Bs and B+s. At least those classes were chem, phys, AP calc ab, and AP stat. My school's on a trimester and I won't be getting my second semester grades until after I send in the application. What are my chances of getting into Andover and what should I do to improve it?

i'll be taking the SSAT on feb, but i took a practice test and it's
Verbal: 784.25
Math: 782
Reading: 692
i didn't really pay attention in the math section and i'm pretty sure i can improve that. reading, i was out of time but i'll work on that so it should get better.

Your ECs look pretty acceptable, but you do realize that at the time you take the SSAT the admission deadline will already have passed, right? The deadline for boarding students is February 1st. You'd also need to interview in the near future as well.

In terms of grades, they look more or less acceptable for lower grades, but if you're considering applying for junior year, they'll need to see some pretty spectacular grades. Not too many new juniors get in and those who do are exceptional. The same will have to go for your SSAT scores. While your practice is looking good in verbal and math, you'll definitely need to improve your reading section.

I'm applying for junior year as well and I feel so inadequate in comparison with the superhuman applicants who you and I will be up against.

TomTheCat: the deadlines (to my knowledge) are NOT Feb. 1. I'm applying to Loomis, Taft, and Exeter and I can assure you that they are all Jan. 15, make sure u get ur aps in on time.

The Andover deadline for boarding applicants IS February 1. Most other schools are January 15, while Choate is January 10.
