Andover Best at College Placement (vs Exeter)

I know this is only one measure. And I know that there are lots of other (more important) reasons to select a particular BS. But College Admission is one data point, and BTW it is reasonably objective data point.

At least by College placement, Andover does significantly better job with the top colleges. I chose the colleges that are my top personal choices.

I'm not saying that Andover is in any qualitative way better than Exeter or other schools, but by this one criteria they are doing the best.

I'm comparing Andover to Exeter, because most will agree that they are peer schools, and also because they happen to have almost the same number in graduating class, around 325 give or take.

If you look at published numbers for "matriculating" students ("admitted numbers are obviously higher) for the class of 2006, they are:

ANDOVER
Harvard - 19
Yale - 13
Princeton - 6
Brown - 13
Columbia - 7

EXETER
Harvard - 8
Yale - 8
Princeton - 14
Brown - 6
Columbia - 7

The results for other recent years are also similarly skewed in favor of Andover. So it's not just an aberration for 2006.

I don't go to either Andover or Exeter, so I have no bias or favorites. And again, don't get mad at me about this not being the only (or even the most important) criteria. I agree. But it's one objective data point.

What also interesting is that, Andover actually has lower SAT Averages than Exeter. So there's something the top colleges see in this beyond test scores.

I don't know where you go those statistics, but Exeter sent 39 to Harvard last year.. and about 26 to each of the others (Yale, Pton, Brown, Dartmouth).

Blair, I think those are from a five-year span. On that website that you gave us, it says that that were the matriculations over five years.

blairt, you are definitely wrong, 39 is the 5 year figure. Exeter sent 39 to harvard in the last 5 years combined

Olivia and bearcats are correct. However, I don't think it makes sense to make your decision b/w Andover and Exeter based on matriculation stats.

TSpartan, could you please cite your sources. I would be interested to see what other schools the students decided to attend. Also, are you sure about the 325 graduating class size, I thought Exeter had a student population of about 1000, and I am assuming Andover must be about the same size, and that seems like a large percentage of students to be graduating.

Legacy and development perhaps?

From Petersons:

309 students graduated in 2006; 298 went to college (Andover)
330 students graduated in 2006; all went to college (Exeter)

Thanks hazmat, what about Exeter?

The OP titled this thread "Andover Best At College Placement (vs. Exeter)" but failed to make any point. These matriculation threads have very little merit.

What is the student population of the schools.... I know I could look it up, but you guys are so darn fast with the info!! ;)

I agree Brighty, college placement is really about getting kids into schools that are the best for them, not necessarily getting them into an Ivy. The Ivy League schools seemed to be important to the OP, but that may not be "the end all" for every student. I am going to Johns Hopkins in the fall because I plan on majoring in biomedical engineering, and that was the best choice for me and not an Ivy.

congrats on Hopkins chacha

Yes, Hopkins is great, especially for med.

Thanks!!! I'm psyched!

Smaller graduating class.

where are you getting the number of matriculated students from exeter 2006-

they're from a 2 year span.

why doesn't andover have any kids at amherst or williams? that seems very odd to me.

Blair - it's a three year span, Class of 2004, 2005, 2006.

Anyways, it is interesting that Andover hasn't sent many kids to Amherst/Williams over the last few years. It would be interesting to see whether top students are getting accepted and just not matriculating or whether they are getting denied. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

I think some of you missed key points in my original posts.

I did not suggest that College Placement should be the main reason for selecting a school. I also am not suggesting that if someone does not go to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, etc. that you will not get a great education. Please read what I said!

I'm just pointing this out as ONE (of many) data points on schools. It just happens to be ONE available data point. And it is relatively objective.

And please, give me a break. If you don't want to go to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. don't take offense with the raw data. It is no statement on you or your decision.

Some of you have asked for the source. I got it from Peterson's and from the schools own site:

<a href="http://www.petersons.com/PSchools/code/IDD.asp?orderLineNum=596579-2&inunId=1775&typeVC=InstVC&sponsor=1%5B/url%5D">http://www.petersons.com/PSchools/code/IDD.asp?orderLineNum=596579-2&inunId=1775&typeVC=InstVC&sponsor=1</a></p>

<a href="http://www.petersons.com/pschools/code/IDD.asp?orderLineNum=792202-1&inunId=1773&typeVC=InstVC&sponsor=1&path=&anyQuery=phillips+academy&volume=PS%5B/url%5D">http://www.petersons.com/pschools/code/IDD.asp?orderLineNum=792202-1&inunId=1773&typeVC=InstVC&sponsor=1&path=&anyQuery=phillips+academy&volume=PS</a></p>

<a href="http://www.andover.edu/cco/matrics/default.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.andover.edu/cco/matrics/default.asp</a></p>

Please don't go off about how College Admissions don't matter and you can get a great education at someplace other than Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Brown/etc. That's not my point at all!
