Hi! I'm going to Andover this September and I just got my dorm assignment. I'm going to be in the Abbot cluster, Double Brick dorm. I was wondering if I could get a little info on the cluster and the dorm. I haven't really heard much about Double Brick and I can't seem to find a lot of info about it. Thnxx in advance :)

I lived and Double Brick last year and it’s awesome. The rooms are really spacious. They are some of the biggest one room doubles on campus. Abbot is the farthest cluster from main campus, but DB is one of the closest abbot dorms. It’s about an eight minute walk from commons.

Thanks a lot! I’m so excited and reading your reply got me even more pumped! I hope you don’t mind some more questions.
How many girls are in the dorm?
Are there two- or three-room doubles too?
Are there washing machines in the dorm? my mom wants me to do my own laundry…bleh

There are fourteen freshman and two upper prefects.
There are no two or three room doubles. It’s all one room doubles and all the rooms are the same size.
There are washers and dryers in every dorm on campus. And don’t worry too much about having to do your own laundry. Most people do. (I do my own laundry).

Not exactly…some of the smaller dorms don’t have their own washers and driers. Typically, the faculty in those dorms will let you use their, though. During the summer, we were given keys to one of the larger dorms with such machines; I was a day student during the regular year, though, so I don’t know for sure that this happens during the regular school year.

Oh yeah. I forgot about the small dorms. They usually just go to a dorm next door and use their machines.

Ok! Thanks! Double Brick seems like an awesome dorm and I can’t wait be there and live in it!! :)

It is awesome! I loved it.

My son got a single in Rockwell North, WQN cluster. Any info?

Rather large (iirc 35 students) boys dorm, the only dorm on campus to be split between two clusters, decent rooms, they get very very hot when it’s warm out. I believe it’s all singles. I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with one of the House Counselors (Mr. Phaneuf) during summer session; he’s new (a teaching fellow) but quite nice. It’s right next to a few tennis courts, if your son is interested in tennis, and it’s close to the health center as well. It’s away from the academic buildings (no rolling out of bed at 7:56 am like you can get away with in FLG cluster, but not so far away that getting to a class would constitute a trek) in (I believe) a nice location. The dean Mr. Tipton is in his first year as a dean, and I haven’t met him, so I can’t speak to that.

Thanks Uroogla! We wanted Flagstaff, but prioritized a single, thus Rockwell. Still, no guarantee to get into FLG if he had asked for a double anyway. We got a nice note from Mr. Tipton. I’m just starting to think about sending some boxes out with clothes and stuff. Only a few weeks left. Scary.

Hey, mickeymammoth! It’s awesome your son is moving into Rockwell - I am a proctor in the dorm directly across the quad from Rockwell, Bishop. Firstly, WQN is a great cluster, and the rooms, in general, are much, much, much larger than those in FLG. Yes, it’s a four-minute walk to Commons and maybe longer to academic buildings like Gelb and Sam Phil, but there are positives to being a little more out of the way. We have a beautiful quad where kids play frisbee and soccer when the weather is good enough; we have a perfect view of the Memorial Bell Tower; and it’s easier to get Dominos to deliver outside of the PAPS (Phillips Academy Public Safety) controlled hours (no deliveries past 10PM on weeknights, none past 11:30 on weekends).

Mr. Tipton was also my house counselor last year, though he, his husband, and his two adorable children are moving out of the dorm. As Uroogla said, Mr. Tipton is taking on the role of Cluster Dean of West Quad North this year. I can’t think of a nicer, more caring person for the job. Whenever I had a problem or a question in the dorm, he was the first person I thought to ask for help.

Congratulations to your son! It’ll be awesome to welcome him to campus in September.

I’m also going to be living in WQN this year! (Bancroft) Yeah WQN! And it’s not far at all. Try living in Abbott. Also there are no freshmen boys’ dorms in FLG so that would be why you’re not in it. And finally, Mr. Tipton is awesome! I’m excited for him to be our cluster dean next year.

Woohoo, Andovergirl! That’s awesome. Bancroft has suuuuch a nice common room, and for that reason, your common room is where WQN Cluster Munches are held each week. Of course, cluster munches suffered a little last fall and winter as a result of the dangerous combination of the common room’s 56" HDTV and new Glee episodes coming out each Wednesday night…

That sounds awesome! I can’t wait! My dorm last year had the smallest HDTV I have ever seen.

Haha, at least you had an HDTV. Bishop’s common room had, and I’m sure still has, a miniscule CRT (fat) TV. Doesn’t really matter too much to me, though, considering I never have time to watch TV, anyway…

^Some dorms don’t have televisions at all!

Yeah I hardly ever watch TV during the school year either other than occasionally watching SNL.

My daughter was assigned to Stimson. PN cluster. Is it far away from campus? Is Stimson’s rooms all singles? Any info would be highly appreciated.

I’ve never been in Stimson, but It’s in a pretty good location. Right across the street from GW, which is our student center. And it’s got a variety of doubles and singles.
