I think it’s Hotchkiss vs Taft, but don’t quote me on it.

Aha! Yes, I remember hearing that.

Yes, it is Taft. Deerfield is Choate.

In terms of academics and the type of people that go there Hotchkiss is closer to Deerfield than to Taft. In terms of sports rivalry, or senior prank days, etc, its Hotchkiss and Taft, since they are close to each other. While Andover is certainly a school that resonates with a lot of people not connected to a BS world, it doesnt make it more desirable than Hotchkiss for those that go/send their kids to BS. Andover and Hotchkiss have similarities in their interest in internationals. Hotchkiss is a much more formal school, with its dress code, etc. It is also half the size of Andover, which may make it more desirable for a lot of people. The biggest difference would be, imo, the population of the school, in terms of geography. Andover will have many more (% wise and in number) students from Boston/MA/New England area, where Hotchkiss will have more from NY/NJ/CT.

yeah i picked hotchkiss.
Thanks guys!

I see that this thread is mostly dead now, but I just wanted to clear something up. If missyujin applied more than two years ago, admissions wouldn’t have been need-blind. Admissions went need-blind for applicants for the entering class of 2008. So sending in her financial information could have hurt her, though it’s still fairly unlikely, as Andover still had a ton of money to dole out. Now though, it’s completely need blind, the adcom doesn’t know whether an applicant applied for aid until after decisions have been made.

Also, Andover has more course variety. Andover and Exeter have the most course variety of any school I’ve seen, and Hotchkiss definitely yields less connections.

The number of courses offered at Andover, as well as by Exeter, are indeed remarkable. One of the many things, however, that impressed me about Hotchkiss was the number of courses available to its students. I counted in that school’s course catalogue for last year about 240 courses for its 575 or so students, which is ratio about 2.4 courses per student. As I recall, that ratio compared favorably to that of Andover, which was, if memory services me well, about 460 courses to about 1100 kids (2.4).

mpicz —> Isn’t Taft Middlesex’s rival?

Middlesex’s rival is St Georges, I think.
