for some reason i dont find many womens matches that exciting. there are more shots where i say to myself, i coulda done that. although mauresmos thought process and robotic/prophetic waying of knowing what to do next is entertaining for awhile.

wow im watching federer now and his attitude/face just looks so POed while blake is human in his motions.

yeah i'm watching it too.

i agree that the women's matches on average are a little less exciting than the guys. but i like more of the players. i just don't care about the men. but i don't think you could hit the shots some of the women make. haha. no offense. i could rally with them if they hit it back to me on purpose...and then i'd be demolished.

Some...not the amazing ones. The avg ones. On a good day

one thing i know i could never do is hit a backhand like mauresmo or hardenne. some of their shot are so incredible, esp since they're women and have a one hander. i can hit a one hander, but no where near their level.

the closest i can get to a shot like any of the women's is the fact that i can hit a 100+mph serve.

=( blake lost. 4 sets though. it was competitive at least.

nadals the only real exciting player to watch right now for me. i always root for him. my logic is that since federer owns everybody hands down except nadal, he's the only player who has a chance to win in the slams, and thus the best man to root for. it's been almost two years since anybody EXCEPT federer or nadal has won a slam (05' jan safin in the austrailian)
the fed's too boring for me. sure, he hits exciting shots, but he never gets the crowd into it or even himself into it. nadal is the complete opposite. i hope the nadal-federer rivalry continues to grow; if it can become a real rivalry to watch, it will make men's tennis so much more exciting agian. it's been years since we've had a real rivalry.

roddick was very emotional last night when he won, and for a moment at least, he seemed to regain the old confidence and excitement of the old roddick (before the suckage in 05-first half of 06).

anyway, i don't think the situation on the mens' side is quite as dour as some people here think.

i'm not saying it's completely dour, i'm just saying i can't connect to any of the guys like i did with agassi, or sampras, or rafter, or ivanesavic, and so on and so forth. just personal opinion.

men's tennis is exciting in general, i mean i watch it. i just don't have a favorite so it makes it less of the "ooo i can't wait to see who wins" exciting.

tonyt,

nice call with fed beating blake in 4

How is Federer boring? He hits more amazing shots than anyone else in tennis. If you want to actually watch superb tennis you watch fed. I'd really rather watch that than hewitt fist pumping or safin throwing his racket.

there you go, you answered it yourself. It's not that it's enjoyable to watch exceptional tennis, but it's a matter of what we'd ** rather ** watch, thus most people would rather watch a fist-pumping Hewitt or Nadal, or a cranky Safin, or an immature youth like Murray, and a legend like Agassi anytime over Federer because basically other than strong tennis Federer offers nothing else to be enjoyed..

^exactly.

jankovic is beatin hardenne. i'm starting to like the girl.

dammit. i can't believe jankovic let henin come back when she was winning 6-4 4-2. ugh.

and what the hell happened to mauresmo. she lost in 3 sets against sharapove, and sharapova won the 1st and 3rd 6-0.

this sucks. i don't even care about watching the final. it would have been much more interesting to see jankovic and mauresmo battle it out.

federer is this generation's lendl.

exceptional technically, but ZERO personality.

frankly, i can't stand federer.

The_prestige, I loved Lendl! LOL! Oh well, to each his own.

Current_student, how can you not find watching a 6'2" blonde with a model's body playing tennis "interesting"! Hehe!!! Maybe you're a woman though, in which case, you will have to merely contend with watching Sharapova's excellent tennis game.

yeah i'm a woman. haha.

if anything i should enjoy watching roddick b/c he has to have the sexiest legs on the tour. but i just don't like him. nadal has nice arms, but he's a little annoying.

i wish i was a guy and could simply be like "tall skinny blond...hot". haha.

Aaaahhhh...you just described Stefan Edberg. You probably don't remember him, but he was very popular with female tennis fans! If I recall properly, he was like 6'3", weighed 160-170 LBS and he was blond. Of course, the fact that he had won 6 majors (2 US Opens, 2 Australians and 2 Wimbledons) and made it to the finals of 5 other majors (including the French Open back in the late 80s) didn't hurt his popularity. He was a great tennis player who held on to the #1 ranking from 1990-1992.

I personally never found his game that much fun to watch, but he did have a wicked serve and volley game and he really was a gentleman.

i never watched lendl, but after seeing a clip of him hit McEnroe in the chest and not even apologizing kind of makes me dislike him.

federer never brings in the crowd. he tends to be a crowd silencer because he usually has a chokehold on the opponent. exciting matches almost always get the crowd into it. so i found him very, very boring to watch.

alexander,
you sound like wikipedia or something. haha.

xe,
i never like lendl, but he actually did apologize, very briefly, during that point. plus, when that happens in a match, the player who hits the other is 99% of the time trying to hit his/her opponent. it's not like "i want to hit my opponent", but it's smart to go to the opponents body when they're at the net b/c they don't expect it. anyway, what i'm trying to say is this happens somewhat often and isn't that bad. it's similar to basketball player giving a rough foul or something if the other is on a fast break.

here's the clip...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xAPwx3z950

well, ive never seen it happen anywhere else, and I've watched tennis since 8th grade (im a senior now) so either i've been unlucky or something else. lendl had the open court on the left but instead just goes for the guy. IMO it was unecessary. so much for sportsmanship.
i did not see any apology from lendl, all he did was bite his lip. perhaps this clip doesn't show it? although that'd be strange because it's in the middle of the match...

Yeah, I am a bit of a stats freak.

XeLnAg_A, are you kidding. You have been involved in tennis for years and you have never been told that the most effective way to neutralize an opponent at the net is to aim for the face or chest? Unless your opponent is asleep or maladroit, she/he will get out of the way and in the process, lose control and most likely the point. Now when you have a guy like McEnrore (arguably the best volley artist in the history of the game) at the net, the need to get the opponent off balance is magnified. I do not recall the incident you describe, but I remember Lendl was always a gentleman.

McEnroe was so entertaining. Everything from his bizarre serve to his incredible touch at the volley. Of course, his on-the-court antics were hilarious. But despite his theatrics, he was managed to keep it clean. The contrasts while watching him play ice men like Lendl or Borg was always fun! LOL

Lendl was very technical, but he was also somehow fun to watch. Maybe because his forehand was so powerful compared to everyone elses. He had a weird habit of plucking his eylashes before serving! LOL

xe,

look at the clip again. but this time only look at lendl after he hits mcenroe. he lifts his racquet while looking at him on the floor. that's the universal gesture of "excuse me" in tennis. like when you tree the net and it just bounce over to your opponents side, you lift your racquet. you think it's really necessary to say sorry? no. he won the point by jamming his opponent up. and mcenroe did an oscar winning perfomance. you don't get many chances to peg your opponent in a match, but you should if you have the chance. not to hurt them or be mean, but to intimidate them and secure the point by giving them no choice but to duck. it's strategy.

and mcenroe hit a horrible volley which led to the short ball which lendl was running to hit. sometimes late in a match when you're running toward a short ball and your opponents at the net and you're tired, all you can think of is hitting it at them or at their feet to make sure you get the ball in and to simply surprise them. you don't want to risk having to whip a short angle or hit it down the line b/c you might end up running through the shot and hitting it wide. trust me, the peg is the easiest and smartest shot he could've taken.

if you want to talk unsportsmanlike conduct, i think there's more of a case with mcceroe and his all the fits he's known for throwing. haha. but that's what made him such an exciting player to watch.
