Andre Agassi

XeLnAg_A, are you kidding. You have been involved in tennis for years and you have never been told that the most effective way to neutralize an opponent at the net is to aim for the face or chest?

that is quite clear. however i and most of my peers agree that it is very bad sportsmanship to aim for their body when they won't be able to block it, as mcenroe was in that clip.

you don't get many chances to peg your opponent in a match, but you should if you have the chance. not to hurt them or be mean, but to intimidate them and secure the point by giving them no choice but to duck. it's strategy.

again, this is something i just dont agree with. it's a subjective issue; we don't agree, and we'll leave it at that.

on agassi:
best ball striker ever in my memory. the sound that his racket made when he contacted the ball was simply perfect, it was something no other player could match.
also: didn't he complete a golden slam?

alex, actually i don't mind lendl so much.

its federer i cant stand - just something about him i just can't stand - very hard to describe, something about his face just annoys me - plus he just has no personality.

one thing that was annoying about lendl was the way he stared and picked at his tennis strings while jerking his head after he won a particularly important point or in between points (i guess it was his unique way of psyching himself up)... and another quirk i remember was the sawdust he always carried around in his pocket which he used to dry the grip on his tennis racket. to be fair, lendl was a decent guy and pretty humble considering his success (too bad he never won Wimbledon) - i guess he was always competing against some of my favs - McEnroe and Connors for example.

that's another point about today's tennis and another thing i have against federer - he's playing at a time of weak men's tennis, there is literally no competition for him (except maybe Nadal) ... remember the last golden age when there were so many great players competing: Mac, Connors, Lendl, Borg, Edberg, Becker, etc.

it's now federer winning everything in sight like the terminator. what fun is that?

Federer definitely is in need of an image consultant! I agree that the mid 70s to the mid 90s were awesome. Since then, only Agassi has been worth watching. Connors is my dad all time favorite, so I always liked him too. Mine is probably Borg, but Agassi and Lendl come in at a close second. I also really liked McEnroe.

On the women's side, where have the Navratilovas and Graffs gone? I don't know if you remember her, but there was a tiny Czech player called Hanna Mandlekova. I had a huge crush on her. She wasn't the most gifted, but she was pretty good. Evert was also fun to wach.

The golden age is gone. Hopefully, a new generation will emerge and quickly.
