Annoyed

Is anyone else getting as annoyed as I am about the massive amounts of fliers and pamphlets this school sends out? I mean really if a student is interested they will contact you, if not dozens of info packets aren't gonna help. (Ok its not quite dozens :)

WUSTL is the college equivalent of a used car salesman!

Did you know anything about Wash U before you received anything?

If yes, did you know that it’s one of the top schools in the country?

Unfortunately, most people don’t know these things. It’s necessary for Wash U to advertise very aggressively in order to attract the applicant pool that the school wants. If anything, the frequent mailings should give you the idea that Wash U is actively trying to recruit the best students, which is more than some other schools can say ('sup Penn?).

I recall receiving an amount of mail from Columbia similar to that sent by Wash U, yet I’ve never heard anyone complain about being “annoyed” by Columbia.

^Received same amount of mail from Columbia that I received from WashU.

Received faaaaaar more mail from 3 random state schools (2 Mississippi and 1 Texas) that continued sending me mail up until August before freshmen year (it’s not too late to enroll! national merit scholars get great scholarships!)

Nevermind I never even applied there to begin with…

Whether or not you receive a lot of information from the school seems to be totally random.

WashU was my D’s #1 choice and she never received a thing from them - and she was a NMF, val of her class, with SAT/ACT in the 99%tile! We have a photo of her sitting on the floor completely surrounded by a mountain of pamphlets, etc. she received from schools across the country (and many duplicates from several other schools), but not one piece from WashU.

Really? I have gotten at least 10 letters from them, 3 of which included applications. But then again, I turned in the data form/supplement the day it came out, so…

I absolutely get annoyed when others say they’re annoyed by the amount of mail from WashU. It honestly doesn’t take any effort at all to glance over a postcard then throw it away. I remember some mailings about the summer research biology research program which reminded me to apply, but I never did, and so I spent my summer working a laborious job instead of pursuing my true passion of science. It’s okay though since over half the people who say “omg, WashU must love me, they’re sending me a lot of stuff, i’m probably gonna get in” get rejected or waitlisted.

I agree. I know it makes people feel good to say “look how much they’re after me, and look how much I want to throw them in the trash!! Yeah, look at me!!”

In personal household, there was lots of this type of thing…Columbia, Duke, Brown…others on the lower end.

Personally, I get excited by college letters, whether it’s from WashU, UChicago, or even Barry University, which told me they’d give me a scholarship. I love to feel sought-after, even if it’s not genuine.

^^ That’s the way I feel as well, Sirensong.

I think it takes arrogance to feign annoyance at something that is either (1) flattering, or (2) innocuous.

Agreed. I’m not sure how annoying it can be to receive letters from one of the best universities in the United States, but I agree with heyalb that this mail is innocuous, and if anything, you should be grateful.

I have to agree. If getting a lot of mail from Wash U is his biggest problem in life, then this is one lucky individual indeed.

I don’t know about all the mail you guys have gotten, but I have received very little. I definitely get more from Richmond - I get at least two letters a week from Richmond.

I recently attended a leadership seminar, and I’m pretty sure that they placed me on some sort of mailing list afterwards, because I’ve been getting mail that I did not sign up for voluntarily from many schools I had no idea even existed. WUSTL was one of them. (I live on the West Coast, and I’m assuming that was the reason why I hadn’t heard of it.) I don’t mind receiving the mail, so long as there aren’t too many repeats!
