So I am an incoming high school senior
GPA: 3.06
SAT: 1130 (taking it again in august for better score)
ECC: 3 Board positions. And I am the founder and president on my own club that helps support injured veterans and their families. Was a cheerleader my freshman year and have over 60 hours of volunteer service.
Im applying to:
Arizona state university
Indiana Uni-Bloomington
UNLV
N. Arizona Uni
Washington State
Csu Chico,Northridge and Fresno
I think UNLV, NAU and probably AZ State will let you in… the rest, probably not. A few others to ponder, depending on your home state - UNR, Boise State, Sonoma, Sac, CSU Monterrey, as well as the ever shrinking list of non impacted CSUs,
@happymomof1 @“Erin’s Dad” I have about $58,000 saved for college . The rest I might have to take loans out or something like that.
My home state is California
Im honestly just looking for schools that will take me
I dont think this matters but im also black, but i dont think schools really look at that anymore. Also I havent taken any honors or AP classes. But i will be taking AP Psychology next year

That’s a link to the WA State common data set. the freshman profile begins on page 9. While your SAT is just a little below the mid point, your GPA is well below avg. If you take a look at the table on page 9, you’ll see what the school considers when evaluating applicants. GPA and SAT are the only items in the Very Important column…That’s why I’d call it a reach.
You can google Common Data Set for any US based college and find the same info in the same format.
Based on the list of schools above, I presume you know about WUE which offers discounted tuition to some public colleges in other Western states. A word of caution - many have excluded majors and tiered tuition programs so research them carefully.
Here’s a link to the UNR program - note they offer a bigger discount to applicants with a 3.25. Another potential gotcha - most non-CA schools have different requirements for math, science, etc. Unlike CA, most will waive some of them but, you need a letter from your school confirming you can graduate without the course…
CA publics aren’t allowed to consider race. Being African-American will help you at private colleges and universities, but that won’t matter if you can’t pay for them, so it depends whether you qualify for need-based financial aid or not.
If you don’t qualify for need-based aid, you might seriously consider the community college transfer route. Spreading your savings over two years of university will give you many great options, whereas trying to stretch 58K over four years will be a lot more limiting. CA CC’s have established transfer paths to CSU’s, UC’s, and also OOS HBCU’s if that interests you.
Why is Indiana, in particular, on your list? Do you have family there? UI is expensive OOS. If you want to be in that area, consider U of Cincinnati, 20 miles over the IN/OH border, which gives in-state rates to CA students and offers great co-op programs that would allow you to graduate with work experience. They also have a large population of veteran students and some interesting research going on in that area https://www.wcpo.com/news/education/higher-education/uc-news/university-of-cincinnati-research-helping-veterans-transition-into-civilian-workforce , if that’s an interest you want to continue pursuing in college.
Other WUE schools to look at include Portland State, if you’d enjoy a larger, urban school in a great city… and Southern Oregon, which is smaller and has a beautiful campus in Ashland, with a feel more similar to a private LAC.
@aquapt I do have family that live near UI. and community college isnt really the route i wanted to go. Do you know of any other schools that offer in state. I know wue isnt automatically given to everyone and i may not even qualify.
A lot of the trick with WUE is just to apply early, as there aren’t unlimited numbers of waivers offered, but they’re not competitive per se. My daughter has friends attending both Portland State and Southern Oregon at the WUE rate, and they all love their schools. If you apply in September when the applications open, you should be fine. You can search the WUE schools by major here: http://wue.wiche.edu/search1.jsp The Utah schools not only offer the WUE rate but also offer a path to establishing residency so that you can pay in-state rates after the first year. They’re very affordable too. U of Utah would be a low-reach for you (possible but not assured), but you’d have no trouble getting into Utah State and the others on the WUE list. I also have multiple friends whose kids have been exceedingly happy at the Montana public U’s, which are also a phenomenal financial deal. And as you noted at the beginning, Northern AZ is a nice option, as is ASU. And UNR in addition to UNLV.
You do have to check for excluded major/programs, depending on what you want to do. (And there are some weird ones, like apparently you can get WUE at the Arizona flagship only if you major in mining engineering?) Also, in-state, there are all the less-impacted CSU’s. Again, it would be easier to narrow down with more idea about academic and extracurriculur interests
@aquapt Ok, thank you so much. You’ve probably been the most helpful person on here. I was always confused by wue. Ill be sure to apply as soon as applications open!!! Again, Thanks a lot!!!
@badatgoodbyes My sons stats are similar to yours. He was accepted into Sac State, Sonoma State, UC Merced, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Washington State, Univ of Arizona, Arizona State and UNLV to name a few. With your stats, I’m sure you would get accepted into any of the schools I listed. Arizona State, Washington State and UNLV particulate in WUE. You’ll be fine. Good luck!
