Another annoying chances thread. =)

Okay, so I’m a freshman at the Ohio State University, and though I’m far from hating it here, I can’t say I’m being particularly challenged academically. Stats (took the highest level classes I could without taking pre-req’s first- I’m an international student, so the AP stuff didn’t really count for me):

1st QUARTER:

-Compulsory Freshman Survey: A
-English 202 : A or A- (final grades not out yet)
-Int’l Studies 201: A
-Music 252: A (My GPA should hover at or very very close to a 4.0)

Courses I’ll be taking next quarter:

-History 508
-Medieval Studies 240
-English 220
-Linguistics 301

Also, I’m the Editor of the English Undergraduate Newsletter, and a member of AID (Association for India’s development).

Essays should be good, recs should be fine as well.

High school- great recs, 2100 SAT, decent academics, Editor of school newsletter, co-director of high school musical, co-designed a fashion line, have a book deal (which my lazy behind hasn’t got to working on yet…let’s just call that a work in progress with a definite offer of publishing when I’ done), blah blah.

I was waitlisted as a freshman applicant, and have honestly had my heart set on Barnard for a long time. I could babble on about how much I love it for ages, but suffice to say, I don’t personally know of another university that combines so many amazing aspects of academia into one ball of awesomeness. So…with that said, chances (and yes, I know nobody knows for sure, but what’s your gut feeling after looking at the stats)?

Obviously, Barnard thought you were pretty much a "fit" since you were waitlisted before. And you have proven yourself academically at OSU, so that is also good.

My only question is what specifically will Barnard offer for you, and you for Barnard, that you cannot do at OSU? You need to bring those sorts of things forward, I believe, in your transfer app... So just be more specific about exactly what constitutes that "ball of awesomeness" (a perfectly apt description, IMO, but I think the ad-comm will need a bit more! :) ).

All that being said, I think your chances as a transfer would be very good.

All the best to you!! Great work there at Ohio State! Obviously, football is not a big deal to you because if you transfer to Barnard you will find THAT to be a VERY different experience than the one you presently have access to!!!

Haha, yes. I'm really not into the football-centric atmosphere here (though I am excited about us going to the finals!).

The reasons I'd state to Barnard are pretty much the truth: OSU has a great Business and Journo school, but in my area of concentration (English) Barnard is pretty much one of the best out there. Besides, my second major is Int'l Relations, and there is no place better than NYC to study that in!

Thanks for your help!

But I don't believe Barnard has an International Relations major...right? I thought they just had politcal science.

Yeah you're right. That's what I would switch over to if I got accepted.

I was just wondering--sorry, this does not have much to do with the original thread--but when you say that you're going to switch over from International Relations to Political Science, I assume you mean that there's not a big difference between the two? Because I've wanted to maybe major in International relations, but if I got into Barnard, then I'd do Political Science too and I was worried about that.

There is definitely a substantial difference between the two majors, but there are a number of courses that are quite similar. If you have looked at the courses for Int'l Relations (at OSU for example) and found them interesting, I dare say you would be fine with the Pol Sc major too.

ah, i see. thanks for explaining! :)

Do I know you (LOL, I know the odds are slim in a sea of 50,000 students)? I am a freshman at The Ohio State University and though I am also far from hating it...let's just say Barnard is still my first choice college (I was flat out rejected for freshman admissions). First quarter was kind of underwhelming and if I do end up staying at OSU, I pray that I can get into the Honors program (plus their priority scheduling is amazing...my Scholars priority scheduling is nice but not as nice).

Continues typing my Barnard transfer supplement essays.
