i am ranked top 10 in the us, formerly number 1 in my age group @sword140

can anyone plz help?

I think you have a good chance. Write good essays and tell us when you get your isee

Essays are very important especially for Groton. It said on the application page on gateway that they value the essay more than any other component on your application. Also Groton is extremely competetive( only 12% or lower acceptance rate). Don’t worry, you’ll have a chance.

Thanks @bobd2902 i tookisee 1/7 hopefully i will know the scores soon, as for the essay, how do you think the format should be?

I’ve applied to Groton once and got waitlisted, but it was for a lack of multimedia and awards. I think I have a fairly decent chance this year, as my essays were strong and I had a lot of artwork, extracurricular awards, etc.

That top 10 in badminton is certainly a plus for you. I’d say you have a pretty decent chance for admission. Good luck!

@gogroton2016 for what it is worth, applicants are not rejected for lack of multi media and awards. Once the boxes are checked for grades, test scores and essays then your extracurricular/s are weighed. Most applicants think that their ECS are hooks. They aren’t. A hook is one of two things: you fill a need for the school as an URM, an athlete recruit, legacy or development OR it is something that makes you so unique that it elevates you above other applicants. I,e you are a virtuoso opera singer or ranked chess player. The top schools obviously get so many applicants with straight A’s and perfect SSATs that they want applicants with those qualifications as well as some unique talent.

@Center you have a very valid point there. I don’t really have a specific thing that makes me stand out, so I’m just hoping that my interview, essay and other factors will hopefully help me… But at the same time, not every person who applies for boarding school is a ranked player or a child prodigy… So in my opinion, every applicant is a case by case decision. But you do make a very valid point that many kids have straight A’s, perfect SSAT’s, flawless recommendations.

But at the end of the day, the school wants to admit someone they can take a chance on, and somebody they really think is fit for their school. I mean, no school wants to bring a student who doesn’t want to go to boarding school. I had a friend who’s parents forced him to apply, and it was apparently evident during his interview, and even though he had fantastic grades, SSAT’s and he was on the state baseball team, he wasn’t even waitlisted. . .

@gogroton2016 I appreciate your insights and just to let you know a couple months ago I was ranked #1 in USA for badminton, if that gives me a plus or anything, you applying for 9th grade? im applying for 8th grade

@Center do you think a ranked badminton player gives you a better chance? Do you think they care about badminton b/c badminton is not that important in USA

@badminton4life I’m applying for ninth. Good luck with second form, its extremely competitive… more than ten applications for one spot…

But yeah, at the end of the day, Groton really wants to see someone who can make a name for themselves in their school. Admittedly, badminton isn’t as popular a sport as football, baseball or basketball, but if you truly give everything your best, and if you can show the admissions committee that badminton is your passion, they would be willing to take a chance with you.

Have you been to campus yet it so nice, I can see why people say groton is an elite school… @gogroton2016

Groton is small i.e. few spots, Noble values legacy, and Roxbury Latin is a reach. I recommend casting a wider net. Belmont Hill? BBN? Rivers?

@badminton4life yes, I have visited the campus twice. It is a magnificent campus, designed for a much larger school. It truly is a selective elite prep school… hope you get in!

@gogroton2016 same to you… as for @preppedparent I went to BBN but it was a bit of a drive from where I am and it is only day school. I haven’t looked at Belmont Hill though…

I feel rly rly bad about my ISEE… I got 63 54 91 94, so just tell me that I wont be able to even get close to these schools

@badminton4life ouch man… but the past is the past… you have to hope that other factors, such as your grades, recommendations, EC’s and your interview will overweigh you bad ISEE scores. To be honest I’ve seen worse scores and they still got in… so don’t give up on yourself!

Good luck!
