Another Brown Student (Sophomore) taking questions!

hey everyone,

my name is eduardo (sounds sexy right?) and i’m going to be a sophomore at brown in a few weeks. i’m new to this collegeconfidential stuff and i realized this tool is pretty big for upcoming freshmen or just kids interested in brown. so with that being said i’m willing to take some questions anyone might have about the university. please don’t ask me crazy questions like " how big is the green?" or like “how many steps does faunce house have?” b/c i don’t know! student life (sure i didn’t know every freshmen but i do have a lot of friends, and maybe that can help with some questions you all might have) the party scene, the dating scene, night life, academics, all kinds of cool stuff. so i’m gona be doing this for about a week and a half so pretty much from now till the 23rd. (actually for one week) so i’ll do my very best to get an answer out and help anyone who wants it. so a little about me (for the sake of being impersonal)…

19 (gona be 20…blah sounds so damn old)
graduated public high school in south texas
bilingual
lived in woolley hall last year
love to travel and plan on doing more of it very soon
love to write (stories, poetry, etc…)
getting into painting
have 6 tattoos and 1 piercing.
love life.

remember no question is stupid…(well unless …well you all know)

I'd like to be the first to give you a run for your money...haha. I can't decide between Brown and Northwestern for ED. Why did you choose to go to Brown?

hey dude coolness for actually going to the post and what not. so to get to the point here i go...

FIRST off my situation senior year in high school. i applied to like i would say 6 colleges. ut (austin), baylor, southwestern, rice, utpa-uthscsa (7 year medical program), and of course brown. in texas if you graduate top 10% in your senior graduating class you are automatically in any texas public school. so from the above list i was already in ut austin. baylor i was really confident b/c i think during my year they take about 80 something % (correct me if i'm wrong but it's pretty high) southwestern (the second hardest school in texas to get into after rice) i went through the interview (might i add it was very "reality hitting") and i got in, rice i got deferred early action then rejected regular, and then the big 2 came. i first got into that 7 year medical program. it played out like this. i attend our local univeristy (about 40 minutes from my house) be there for 3 years get a certain gpa and mcat score and i'm in no questionsed asked to the utsa medical school. (also the higher your gpa was the lower your mcat could be, but they had a base limit, 3.25/24 i think it was) so i interviewd for that (and it was a real medschool admission team and what not it was really interesting) and on april 1 i was at the post office and i got a letter from the med school saying i was one of the 7 who got picked (there some 100 applicants). holy **** right! i was stoked. what was funny however not once did brown ever cross my mind. i applied to brown b.c yeah it had everything i ever wanted. small classes where kids are there b/c they want to be there (no core curriculum), professors being able to call on you by name and chill with you after hours (like at there house, which we had many class parties at in ed81), amazing people with amazing experiences (my friends cover the entire usa and many nations abroad), and i would be able to explore the eastern usa and grow more as an individual. wow sounds like a lot, but b/c of the stigma I made with brown (ivy league school,,blah blah blah i'll never get it, whatever whatever) which was very immature on my part. so going back to the post office moment....i got in. wow i thought! i'm practically in med school. .....BUT was it really something i wanted? can i sign my life away right now? i went home that night and got online to see what was up with brown. my mind was already made up (in terms of realism that i already established with brown being to big of a long shot) and BAM------I GOT INTO BROWN---- everytihng changed. i was now the lady with a blind fold holding the scale of justice. what did i really want out of an education that would impact my life forever? being 40 minutes away? having to travel 8 hours away? being in the same bubble? being thrown into another world? i'm not gona lie dude i talked with a lot of people. parents (and from a cultural standpoint that was very very hard and i'm extremely serious) but when it came down to it i thought ok:::if i'm having doubts of being a doc (which i was even before brown came along) i should go to brown b/c it has everything i stated above and more academics than the local univ. so if i change my mind i can do anything they have to offer (or even make my own!) and if i do wana become a doc well brown has awesome pre-med classes. so either way i would win. now i'm a public policy/english concentrator (double) and i love it. i've been to nyc, boston, california all within one year. made the best friends of my life. saw snow for the first time! experienced a barrage of emotions i can't even describe. i was FINALLY living a life of choices that came from a soul that didn't believe could make them. that's why i chose to go to brown and what happend to me (a abrigded version). good luck.

Many thanks!

With the increased freedom Brown offers (in like course selection, social life, clubs, etc.), do you find that course work is tougher than it probably would be at other colleges that have core curriculums?

humm...i would limit the term "increased freedom" towards academics only. any college in the usa (to my knowledge) prolly won't deny you membership in certain organizations and what not. yes brown does have an increased freedom perscpective academically but does that make the classes easier or harder? ( i think that was the foundation of your question). i feel it really depends on the student. i personally was able to participate in project health asthma swim and was a visiting poet to elemetry schools. it took some time out of my schedule for academics no doubt but it was nothing REALLY REALLY demanding. like i said it just depends on you and your TIME MANAGMENT SKILLS. don't try to be something u are not especially when it comes to academics. remember u are there to be educated. so don't try to procrastinate if u never did in high school or any other schooling. classes are very challenging, but fun!

so BrownBarbour350, do you mean you got into the PLME program???
can you please list your stats?
thanx

i might of confused some people on my previous post so to clarify i did not apply to the plme program. like i said i got into a 7 year medical program in texas. the plme program is 8 years. anywho about the whole stats thing....i really..well how can i say this? humm....ok the whole "rate me thing" is (at least to me) kinda odd to me. first and foremost we are not admission counselors so we do not know what is going on that year they accept kids. the best thing i tell everyone who wants to go to any college is to look at the school with a new pair of eyes...(when it happens to you it will make perfect sense). to be a good fit with any school look at the MISSION STATMENT of the university u are interested in. if u fit what the "typical student" is at that place then apply. don't worry about stats or big numbers. i'm not gona tell anyone my stats b/c i think they are pointless. however the college admission process is a game and each "player" plays it diffrent. just apply to your dream school whatever name it may be and just put your soul into your application. a tip: when it comes down to the essays just do them plain and dry the first time around. i didn't revise anything or get anyone to look at them much less pay someone to edit it. (my grammer sucks but it's summer please bear with me) that's where i was in time and i was happy with it. good luck.

What is Browns stance on (underage) drinking?

How is the music scene around Brown and in Providence?....when I was there I saw waterfire(kickass), a reggae fest, and a Sublime tribute...is AS220 really scorned by the town?

Do the Brown sports get much attention?

How are the girls?

How's New Pembroke 3 as a dorm?

I'll help out a little. Brown's official stance on underage drinking is that you can't do it but its very widespread and since RC's are only there to "help with the adjustment to college" and not as police or authorities its quite easy. Even DPS often doesn't care (Department of Public Safety). If you can get it (ie someone you know has a fake) then its easy. People sometimes even play Beirut in the hallways of dorms, in their rooms with the door open, etc. At frats its even easier. Its very laid back and easy to drink - no worries really, especially from what I've heard about a lot of other schools. My friends at other schools are often impressed with how Brown treats students like adults. Music scene is pretty good - the strand, etc. Boston also close. AS220, don't know much about, I know people who go sometimes.

brownbarbour350 or moat2moat can best handle this---what is/are the most coveted campus jobs for freshmen? i know brown has generously replaced the work-study part of the fin-aid pkg for frosh with a scholarship. but if you intend to work anyway......

so first off on the drinking.... yeah it's pretty lax. it's done almost everywhere and if campus police does come they just tell u to go home. it's a big respect thing. they know u are in college and are gona have a good time so they expect for you to have it but when like a complaint gets filed and they come to break it up it's nothing personal. everyone's cool at the end. around town fakes work pretty damn well from my experience.

girls... yeah the girls are really cool down to earth people. i've had nothing but cool experiences with them. again same with the drinking thing. just respect the situation and everything is cool. common sense also if your cool with them they are gona be cool with you.

new pembroke 3? i know i once hung out with a friend around that area. i only went there once and i thought it was ok... nothing extremely in the dumps, but nothing totally fancy.

the job on campus? i heard guarding faunce house was really sweet. u sit in this transparent box and be on the computer. (at least what i saw) but i mean u can get a gig through BUDS and be a card swiper. (u just sit down and take peoples id cards and swipe them in a machine) another good one is satalite gym monitor. in em-wool there is a small gym and the univeristy pays like one student to like play babysitter over people who work out. pretty nice.

You were in Wooley last year, correct? How was it? Are there decent-sized rooms? What did your room come already equipped with? Also, how many steps does Faunce have? :p

yeah i was in woolley this past year. it was pretty sweet bc i think the summer b4 i moved in they renovated the entire building and as i was moving in they just finished a satelite gym on the main floor. like i said it was pretty tight. the rooms were very nicely sized. (same goes for emory, champlin, and i think morris {all in the same building}) they were big enough to have really cool parties in them so yeah they are sized well. it comes with your basic stuff: bed, closet, desk, chair, and shelves. good place overall. PLEASE NOTE****** THE HOUSING AT brown is completely random!!!!! freshmen year no one has a say in where they live. *** after that then u have the housing lottery (which i will so not get into b/c trust me you will have a blast with it the following years)

Hi, I was wondering if you could give me a little insight into the Premed program at Brown. How would you rate it on a scale from 1-10? In addition, how does Brown compare to other Ivy Leauge Universities? Thanks.

Does Brown offer an art supplement form on its application where the art factualty evaluates art or any other special talents that an aplicant may possess? Thanks.

I have 2 questions:
Do you mainly spend time on campus or is it easy to get around to other parts of Providence without a car?

and
In taking advantage of the absence of a core curriculum, what kind of interesting courses did you take during your freshman year?

Premed program at Brown - there's no premed major but I thin maybe 90% of students get into one of their top choice med schools? Maybe I made that statistic up...its high. How do we compare to other Ivies? We rock man. That's way too vague a question to answer. We have one of the smallest grad programs and we're one of the most undergrad focused, so thats how we compare academically. What did you mean?

Probably, call and as the admissions office.

People mainly stay on campus but its easy to get around to other parts of Providence by walking or taking the trolley - Wickendon Street, the mall, Federal Hill, Fox Point, Downtown, the waterfront, etc.

I think I talked about my courses elsewhere.

brownbarbour back me up on any of this.

hey everyone so i have 5 questions and i'll do my best to see what's up on all of them. here we go...

1) how's the pre-med program? ----- like you have read from brochers and what not kids who want to go to med school and of those who apply about 90 something % get in to one of their top 3 choices (pretty sure on that one b/c i was at a freshmen meeting during adoch and one advisor said something around that 90 something number) so yeah i mean brown will prepare you to do the pre med reqs. no pre med major remember that and u can major in anything u like just as long as u get the pre-reqs done. don't lie to yourself classes are gona be challenging. i've known people staying up all night to study and do problem sets for chem or whatever it is they had going on that night, BUT from the looks of it they seemed to benefit from it.

2) brown compared to other ivies/ schools.... like "moat" said very hard to say. personally it's all about what you want from a school. plain and simple. no 2 schools are the same. however i did talk to a provost one time to just say hi and talk about classes and he told me that brown and stanford are amazing places for your undergrad carreer. but like i said everything is up to the student seeking what they want for an undergrad.

3) art supplement? humm....i'm not art major or take any classes this year from the RISD/Visual Arts departments so i wouldn't know anything concrete. HOWEVER. u need VA10/11 to get into any upper level course be it at brown or RISD. YOU CAN SUBMIT A PORTFOLIO to be "tested out" of those classes. i know my roommate did and that's how i know about that issue. but best bet would be to call the university and ask about that.

4) spending time on campus vs. exploring providence? ---well first off we have no cars on campus freshmen year. so we have to walk everywhere! NO BIG DEAL AT ALL. everything (including the mall which is about as far as i've been in providence for student/fun stuff) in about 5-10 minutes of walking. sure it's down a big ass hill but i mean it's totally doable. i spent a lot of time on campus going to various parties in various dorms/houses. went to the mall often for movies (although the avon is really cool for indi flicks) and personal stuff for the dorm.

5) interesting classes i've taken---- an amazing class i've taken (that was also my FIRST YEAR SEMINAR AND CAP CLASS) was PP0070 "religion and public policy" w/ professor clifton. amazing class and awesome professor/mentor. so interesting never got bored and had a blast. another cool class was RS11 "approaches to religion" w/ professor bagger. super interesting approach to religious studies and incorporation of various outside texts. really cool lecturer. all my english classes were amazing as well. (EL 11, EL18) "the academic essay, and intro to creative non-fiction"
