Another Brown Student (Sophomore) taking questions!

ok so we have a few questions on the table.

1: transfers? ok i really don't know too much about how transfer kids were treated but i knew one kid who came into brown his sophomore year and people were generally cool with him. it's all about respect when it comes to the bottem line.

2: weather? i'm from texas and it's super hot 24/7! so like i had to buy all kinds of clothes in providence and take advantage of the winter sales here. but it does get cold there. and it snows/rains like crazy. but i mean it makes sence given the location. you will see all the seasons and trust me you will have amazing days.

3: city life? thayer street is a really good hub for going around places right next to brown. it has the avon (local movie place) and some really good places to eat. the "City" is about 10 minutes down a little hill, which u can walk to. there u'll hit the mall and some other nice places to eat. most of the action is on campus though (parties and what not)

4:car? i think as freshmen u can't take cars, but i knew some kids who took them and from what i know they didn't have a problem. but i'm not too sure where to park though. and honestly u really don't need one at all. and gas is like 3 bucks anyway...lol.

5:scores/feeling dumb/double concentrate?: ok this is a good question(s). first off about the scores. look i didn't score hot on any of my stan. tests. i just took them to submit them to brown and didn't kill myself over them. i honestly just put my best application i could at the time with my essays, recs, extra curr., scores (stan. and high school) and let it out there. i feel brown is not gona care about perfect scores but rather pose weight on a overall feel good applicant who has character and can operate the "Brown system" to their advantage. they look for special kids (we don't all {i haven't met one actually} have perfect anythings!) who fit there mission/philosohy statement. when i was going into brown i had this naive notion that "man i'm at a big time school everyone is gona be all cut throat and not gona wana chill or help me out or whatever" TOTALLY NOT THE CASE!!! EVERYONE i've met was soo damn nice and down to earth. everyone was helping each other and contributing. as far as double concentrating i'm pretty sure i'm gona double in public policy and english. so i would say i think u can double in anything u want BUT just make sure with the department(s).

Why is Brown so low in the Shanghai international ranking:86/100.
I'm from Toronto,and a public U like UT ranks 24.
I wont be wasting my money on Brown.Besides Ms Cappucino wasnt too nice when she talked to my sister yrs ago, when she was up here recruiting, when she learned that my sister wanted to do the liberal arts/med combined 8 yr programme.

Anyone see a bridge to shove the troll under?

yeah dude about rankings...if u haven't figured it out that rankings (at least in my opinion) are completely dumb only created by people trying (and doing well for themselves) to make money (which they have) then i mean whatever base your school choice for the next whatever many years on a number list. pick a school that is awesome for you. who cares about a number. publishing is about making cash and honestly (i think it's a brilliant idea "this whole ranking colleges" on the economic side of making money) to any serious kid applying to any college don't go b/c it's high ranked. go b/c u love it.

about the whole bad admissions rep. sorry dude i can't comment on that b/c i don't know your sister or that ad rep u spoke about. but i know u aint your sister right? and u have a mind for yourself so i take it u can make a choice based on your reasons and experiences not that of anyone elses.

Hi,
I'm an incoming Brown freshman. I'm in the process of trying to figure out my course schedule & was wondering if any current Brown student's knew anything about EL0016 vs. EL0018 - Thanks!

Hey, I have a couple of questions:

1) Are the people at Brown down to earth? Are there Cliques?
2) How expensive is Brown?
3) BrownBarbour350, just to confirm, u said that proffessors are able to call u by name? So that means that it is a close-knit community type of atmosphere and if u need help then Proffessors will help u out right? U won't have to make appointments with their TAs, right?
4) How is the security on and off campus as Brown (for a girl). Is there any stealing or anything like that?

Thanx.

Also, what is the CLEP policy at Brown. I'm going into my senior year right now and if I take AP classes rather than CLEPs, then the AP exam scores won't be recieved untill july of '06 and that will be a waste right?

EL 16 vs. EL 18 so basically what i did was go to boca.brown.edu and get the course description of the 2 classes u wanted to know about. i would assume journalitic writing would be obviuously investigative reporting (i have not taken that class but from the description lies the assumption) HOWEVER i have taken EL 18 with Sarat (which might i add is an awesome teacher) and that is a more PERSONAL approach to creative writing. focusing more on memoir, personal story, literary journalism.

ok so questions about people at brown.

yeah most of the people i've known at brown (people i consider family) are really down to earth. so open and coming from all over the place. not snobish or anyhting like that. totally amazing people.

yeah brown's classes are really small. for the exception of like huge classes like neuro 1, en9, econ 11, ps10 all other classes are super small. around 20 or less. the classes i mentioned above have really cool professors so like i mean they are in high demand. not to say that other professors are not up to par. some classes are really hard to get into that limit at 20 kids.

secruity for people on campus is really good. they are up to date on a lot of stuff there. i'm not a girl but know a lot there and i've heard no complaints so far.

Just to answer question 2) and the second post...

Brown is 43k or so a year right now. Check their webpage for exact numbers. That of course, is room, top meal plan, and tuition.

As for APs... so what if they get the scores in July? The AP test scores are not for the sake of admission, your schools don't take that into account unless you list it for them to read, they never get those grade reports. The AP grade reports are for the credit, or at Brown, far more often, placement into class once you are admitted.

so if you do horrible on an AP exam, the school you apply to won't know as long as you don't give them that information? they will only know that you took that AP class and passed?

and does brown consider your freshman GPA as well?

Yes, they'll never see that 1 you got on Latin: Virgil or whatever it is. And yes, Brown considers your freshman GPAs. They will see whatever your school transcript is, and if it's anything like most, it'll include a high school GPA including all courses and years as considered by your school.

yeah they won't know the ap scores unless you send them. a tip for classes and everything like try not to slack off and not take any classes senior year. like even though u have enough to graduate and can now take an easy senior year. only do that like if u have to work after school for some cash or whatever. don't do home and sit on your butt when u could be taking like another core subject. sometimes admission peoples in any school check out the senior workload and see whats up there.

hey-

I really love everything I hear about Brown, academically and just in general. The only thing that worries me is I've heard some people say there's a pretty bad drug/alcohol problem, or at least larger than at some other schools (of course it's pretty much unaboidable wherever you go). I don't drink, and I don't do drugs. I don't really mind if other people do, but I don't really want to be at parties where everyone's drunk or high etc. except me. I guess I'm just wondering, in your experience(s), how prevalent are drugs and alcohol on campus and if you don't want to be involved in that, how big a cramp is that going to put in your social life?

Would you say that self studying for APs is impressive or would it be better to just take the AP classes that are offered at my high school? I am going to be a junior and I don't have any APs this year so I am thinking about self studying in art history and psychology. Senior year I am going to try for AP world history, english, and possibly chemistry? Is this a good idea? And does Brown really like to see AP students taking the AP tests?

upsilamba,

Brown has, in my opinion, a very tolerable social scene for someone like you. Alcohol is big, but not nearly as forceful as at other schools I've visited/heard about. Drug use does not live up to the Brown pothead stereotype, so don't worry at all about that. I know people who, as a rule, did neither, and loved their social life at Brown. They were fine being friends with people who were much heavier partiers, and didn't succomb to some kind of evil peer-pressure influence. Really, don't worry about it. If you like getting drunk, you'll be able to easily - Brown is liberal and trusts its students, and as such, has a very sensible alcohol policy, and you'll LOVE your time here. If you don't, I promise you, you'll still LOVE your time here just as much as the aforementioned group.

Does anyone know what the theater dept is like at Brown? My daughtere would love to be a theater major with a strong liberal arts background and just wanted to know if anyone had any insight about this dept. Thanks, Nanci

Also, anyone have comments about the music ensembles at Brown --
Orchestra, Jazz, small ensembles? Thanks.

Two questions about the school..
1) How Safe is brown? (Is it easy to get around safely... like say to walk to RISD)

2) Is it hard to get the classes you want?

Getting to RISD you don't ever have to feel unsafe. Most of the areas surrounding Brown are safe, and safeRIDE and RIPTA can help you get most anywhere you need to as it is.

2) Depends on the class. Most classes it's not too bad, and there is an unofficial rule that if you show up for the first three classes and talk to the professor and really show an interest chances are you'll get into a class even if they really didn't want to let you in there. There are a few classes that are far more difficult to get into, of course, since they are popular and accept very few spots.
