Prompt: Does the truth change depending on how people look at things?

Truth is something everyone strives to find and keep. Thought world does consist of lies in politics, business, and normal life, most people try to find truth. Truth is associated with goodness and justice which is why kids are taught not to lie and societies have court systems. Yet, many people debate and settle that their are relative truth depending on the point of view; this is one of the ways to compromise and avoid conflict. However, the truth is never subjective as American slavery and St. Augustine both agree.

As more people immigrated into America, new crops and economy flourished. The south had a warmer climate than the North as well as fertile land to farm. Because early settlers in the south came for economic reasons, people claimed vast areas of land and family life only slowly developed. Due to uprisings of indentured servants and weak healths of Indians, the southerners resorted to African slaves who were stronger for labor. As the 19th century rolled along and the Civil War approached, slavery became one of the conspicuous issues for debate. Abolitionists in the North protested against the ill treatment of slaves. On the other hand, the Southerners contended that slavery was beneficial to both whites and blacks. They defended that only a few people treated the slaves wrongly. Though the constitution clearly states, "All men are equal", slaves were considered property. No matter how much slavery was defended, the truth was that the blacks were not treated like normal humans and many of them were in misery as proved by runaway slaves. The truth prevails which eventually ed to the Proclamation of Emancipation.
St. Augustine was a great philosopher who searched for the truth of God. In "Confessions of St. Augustine", he recounts his life story including his journey to find truth. He was raised in a Catholic home, brought up by a religious mother. As he reached adulthood, he was enraptured by rhetoric and was captured by the Manichaein heresy. It seemed to answer his questions concerning God. Yet, when more questions came up, his religious teachers only referred to the coming of a great rhetorician in Manichaeism, Faustus. However, Augustine realizes the untruth packaged in eloquent rhetoric as he conversed with Faustus. Though at one point he fervently believed manechaeism to be the truth, he was unable to deny the real truth he later found in Catholicism. St. Augustine reveals that though there are many ways to interpret truth, the real truth stands firm on its own.
Relativism of truth is the prevailing idea of the 21st century. People see truth differently and accept that there are different truths. Yet, if there were multiple truths, they are not truths; it is going against the definition of truth. The reality of slavery and Augustine's journey shows that the truth is revealed and it prevails.
