New on the newstands today is JazzTimes magazine's annual college roundup. A couple of aricles--about MSM's 25th anniversary, Herb Alpert's contributions to jazz education, an article about different ways to study music, an article about trumpet playing/lips issues (!)

“Herb Alpert’s contributions to jazz education”

And to music education in general. Mr. Alpert and his wife Lani Hall are understated, genuinely good people who put their money to work here in Southern California in wonderful ways for music students. He was a sensitive, creative and honest head of A and M records and it was a sad day for many in the music industry when he sold the business to Polygram. Mr Alpert took the millions he made and now he is just as sensitive and creative when it comes to his direct and generous involvement with music education.

***I used to encounter Mr. Alpert (on a business level, not personal) on a weekly basis back when I was in my twenties. I can not say enough good things about him as a human being or as a generous benefactor.

I don’t know if you are aware of how interesting the start of “The Tijuana Brass” is. Mr A started the whole thing by writing and recording “The Lonely Bull” by overdubbing his own performances and releasing it under HA and The Tijuana Brass. But of course there was no Tijuana Brass at the start. After the song became a hit, he had to find some musicians FAST.

Another fun fact:
Mr Alpert got his BM in performance at…USC! (not at UCLA as one might imagine) I guess there is not as much rancor between schools as one would think.
