Ok so I’ve only completed 2 official AP courses so far (AP us history and AP language and comp) and did horrible on both exams 3,2 respectively in my junior yrs. However, in my junior yr, I also did self-studying for AP world history and AP Biology and got 4,5 on the exams, however, I didn’t officially take the courses (my school doesnt even offer ap world history so I was able to be dismissed from my hs and took it at another town’s hs). Does anyone know if Brown will give me credit for this or not?

And im currently taking ap calc ab, ap lit and ap us gov. Im obviously gonna take all ap tests but im also currently studying Physics on the side. Im also NOT in ap physics but im enrolled at a local college in a physics program and im doing a research paper on industrial plasma deposition in the field of submicrons. Would it be too late to worth mentioning to Brown?

answers would be greatly appreciated, thanks

I'm so confused...at the info session I went to this fall, the adcom said the only time AP credit would be given is in extenuating circumstances. She gave an example of some guy who got in an accident and used his AP credit to graduate on time.

I emailed my friend about this and this is what she said:

You don't get credit, but you can use your score to place out of beginning level classes, i.e. if you get a 5 on the AP French Exam, you can start off in FR50. The policy changes from dept. to dept., and you'll get a sheet explaining it all during orientation.

I'm not trying to be a pain, but I was just always under the impression that Brown doesn't give credit. That link said for 2003-2004 freshmen. Has the policy changed or something?

You don't get credit toward graduation. However, for some APs (such and bio), you can get credit toward your concentration. My BC Calc, bio, and physics all are counting toward my degree in biology! If you have a certain number of APs you can graduate early, but you still need to take the requisete 30 classes at Brown to graduate.

idk, ive also studied macroeconomics so this study-off the side of school thing is turning out to be a mess, I wound up having to get driven like 2 hrs on test day last yr to take the Ap macroeconomics test (school doesnt even offer it until senior yr and i took the ap test junior year) but i cancelled the score cause i knew what felt like *****. From what I've seen graded in ap exam review books tho, it looked like i woulda got a 4. I got advice, don't take extra APs outside your school courseload because it's a pain in the ass. I actually posted this in the original topic post but figured I would kill my message with the World History and bio. Tho i think i may have gotten a 4, truth is I wont ever know cause the score was cancelled right after testing.

So I took Lit and us officially (transcript), world/bio/macroecs unofficially (self study) and my self-study grades were actually better off. My advice as to why you shouldn't do this however is because 1) my gpa greatly suffered 2) i became depressed coming home to all that *ty work 3) i now find out it wasnt worth a yrs trouble just to get credit for like 4 hrs of work or whatever it is 4) since I didnt like the macro teacher, I took both world and macro with contending times at two different schools as well as the bio. I could've easily taken bio at my school tho but i didnt wanna test with the kids who had actually been in the course. Idk, it would seem kind of weird to see some idiot taking the exam without taking the course. Pretty funny too because nobody from my school knows I went AP exam crazy last yr and went to a total of 3 schools just to complete all 5 exams. Just didn't want em to know that I was obsessed with getting all that * done.

Scores on the AP's don't matter nearly as much as SAT scores. I know a girl who got a 2 on her US History AP and now she's at Harvard. I know another one who got a 2 on History and a 3 in French or something; she's at Duke.

Eh. There's no problem in taking an exam without a class if you know what you're getting yourself into. I took the Spanish Lang and Micro exams without taking classes, and did fine, and I know people who took Comp Gov on their own, and a few others doing Micro. There were a couple seniors last year taking the BC exam when they were only enrolled in Calc AB and so on. I guess people at my school don't really care who's taking the exam, we all go out for lunch afterwards together anyway. If you perceive it as something embarrassing that's how they'll see it too.
