I've enrolled into 1A.

Data:
Tutorials: Limit:200 Enrolled:53 Waitlist:117 Avail Seats:147, so all good.
But all the 6 sections are greatly overfilled: limit is 22, enrolled + wait listed: 28, 23, 35, 30, 29, 25 (+7 added recently).
Position on the wait list doesn't matter at all.

So unless they expand the number of sections, some 177 - 132 = 45, or 25%, will have to drop the class or get kicked out. (And that's making the assumption that no more people will wait list - I won't be surprised if this figure goes up to 200 or even 220).

Question: what are the real chances of making this class? Are there any particular kinds of students (apart from those specializing in East Asia, obviously) that they favor?

Thanks.

I would suspect that they favor anyone they think is not just taking this to boost the gpa with an easy course because they are already speaking chinese at home. Someone with a related major or who makes a case to them that the class is tied to their overall academic direction - they are specializing in the economics of asia, for example.

If you are a freshmen I think that you have a better chance because then you can take the higher levels in the future which the department wants. Just have a good reason for learning chinese.

exactly. Contacting the professor/department and communicating a good basis for taking the class might get you in ahead of others on the waitlist.

Thanks for your input.

That is more or less what I suspected to be the case.

First lesson is apparently an interview in which they question you on why you want to learn Chinese.
