Another swing thru NC - NCSA, ECU, UNCG

D will be doing a voice lesson with a voice teacher at UNCG in August and we will probably take a look at East Carolina and North Carolina School of the Arts while in the state.

I haven't found much info on vocal performance at NCSA - any experience with it here?

Any info on teachers at NCSA or ECU would be appreciated.

Fletcher Fellows are the premiere singers at NCSA and they are usually postdegree students, sometimes MM candidates. They usually do the roles in the opera productions. New orchestra conductor next year, fairly new chancellor (who is also a conductor), some new MT emphasis (not sure if this is a program now, think it is part of drama program), includes high school students in program (state magnet school for the performing arts which coordinates with college program) Pratnicki and Taylor have good reputations as voice teachers. Good luck!

Cartera45,
My daughter and I are planning a trip to NC/SC to visit schools. She is interested in vocal performance. We have planned to visit NCSA. I take it from your post that you have already been in the area before. Any other schools that you were impressed with that you would suggest us looking into?

We visited UNCG, Appalachian State and Elon. We both loved the town of Boone - App State - great little restaurants, coffee shops, seems like a great college town. The people there were the friendliest that we have ever encountered - anywhere I think. She sat in on two private lessons, a chorale rehearsal and a diction class. There is a real feeling of nurturing and support. UNCG has a great facility and has a much more competitive feel to it. There are many more graduate students there and it has a lot of students who commute in and those things concern us. She sat in on a private lesson and a chorus rehearsal. At Elon, she met with the head of the music department and sat in on his rehearsal with the chorus and sat in on a private lesson. Everyone was nice at Elon - completely different environment from the others. I prefer the laid back feel of ASU, but my daughter would be comfortable in either place. The program there is very musical theater oriented though - very few vocal performance majors.
