Answering ALL Questions Related to Rutgers Pharmacy

My daughter has been accepted to the Rutgers Pharmacy school. Rutgers is her first choice school. Does anyone know if pre-pharm students are eligible for any merit scholarships? If so, how does it work?

^ the two of you would said you/your daughter heard from rutgers pharm already and got in did you apply for fall 2011? and when did you submit all required credentials by?

oh, and congrats! :)

Yeah I did apply for fall 2011. I submitted everything by the last week of September. I’m still anxious about scholarships though.

My daughter also applied for Fall 2011 and all materials were in by the third week of September.

Hey, does anybody know what the difference is between the school of environmental and biological sciences vs. the school of arts and sciences is? I got accepted into the first school and my application for the second school is still processing. I applied as a biology major for both of them in hopes of entering med school afterward. Will both schools get me there, after four years that is?

Just curious about the stats of those who already got in to Pharmacy.

My daughter’s stats were high. Class rank is 1. SAT greater than 2250 which I hope nets her at least a small merit scholarship. We are OOS. I would be happy to pay in-state tuition. Maybe we should move???:-)

In response to the question about medical school. I have a son in his second year of medical school. It does not matter which school you attend as a bio major. To get into medical school you need better than a 3.75 GPA. You need A’s in all science courses. You also must score better than a 30 on the MCATS. Getting interviews for medical school all depend upon your grades in college. None of my son’s friends who got a C in any course during their first 3 years in college got into medical school. If you want medical school, you have to commit yourself from the first day of college to study hard. My son took AP classes in high school and scored 4s and 5s. He could have placed out. He did not. He retook calc and bio in college and got easy As and started padding his cum. He graduated with a 3.96. Med school is a hard track and not easy once you get there. With the dedication you need to get through, it should be thought of as a vocation, not just a job. Good Luck to you.

Hi, I just found out yesterday that I got in (I’m still in shock…)
My stats:
2360 (superscored) on SAT
(800 CR, 800 W, 760 M)
GPA: 4.085 on 5.0 scale(weighted)
790 Math II, 690 Chem
Average ecs, some leadership, decent volunteering

To anybody who has gotten in/is currently in the program, does anybody know how long they take to tell you about scholarship info?
Also how do you know what campus you are in for the school?

Thanks mom2339.

2350 superscore on SAT (750 CR), 94/100 weighted GPA (91/100 unweighted), 800 Math II, 800 Chem, 730 Bio E
Robotics (awards with it), no leadership, bad volunteering in comparison to my friends (some have several hundred hours).

2320 single score on SAT (only score I sent 730M 790CR 800W), 4.0 weighted gpa (on a 4.0 scale)
FBLA w/ couple awards, judo, volunteering a bunch of places that somehow amounted to about 500 hours o_0, trading firm

IMO, my extracurriculars have any scientific trends, but rather a business focus…I first got accepted to Rutgers to only SAS and RSB, and Pharm as “In Process”, but my status changed to accepted yesterday. Good luck to those still waiting!

I’m still waiting :-/

I heard that rutgers pharmacy ONLY accepts students
who are in the top 5% of their class? is this true>

not true…a lot of my friends who r in pharmacy were not in the top of their class it wasnt mostly based on their SATs for those are out of HS

So I actually have some questions that aren’t about whether or not I can get in (I got accepted about 2 weeks ago, actually) or about what to use AP credits for (I think thats been answered about a million times). The big one: Are the students HAPPY at Rutgers Pharmacy? Or is it just full of people who went because pharmacists make good money and hate every second of it? Is the course load suffocating? Everyone talks about bio and chem and other preprofessional courses, but how are the professional years? I like the idea of the 6-year pharmacy program, but I also want to have fun and enjoy college. Do pharmacy students interact with other Rutgers students much? I’m studious, but I don’t want to have to lock myself in the library for six years. All of the current students on CC have been really helpful with choosing classes and dorms and such, but skimming this thread I didn’t find too much about how happy the students are, which is really important to me. I rambled a bit, but any input from current students would be appreciated.

Just want to give my 2 cents from I heard and knew. I went to the admitted student event this past April and I talked to a few who are still enrolled or already tranferred out to another school in Rutgers. Yes, this is the most prestigious school in R. Almost all the students are very bright academically. I think they even select students just based on GPA and SAT without looking at the essay, activities, etc. My son’s essay was vey sloppy with errors but still accepted. Once you are in, it is still very competitive. I heard that the “better” student" do not want to help others as they need to keep their scores higher. You can make real friends but most likely from other schools or your dorm-mate as they are not competitive. I guess the payoff is a stable job with good income after 6 years.
Of course, I am sure there are exceptions but that’s is what I heard and saw. One active kid I know actually transferred out because he doesn’t want to just study for all his college life!

Sugarcookie has a great point. Can this thread get back to answering question about actually being a pharmacy student at Rutgers? My daughter and I would love to hear from some actual pharmacy students about the pros and cons of this program. It would help in making the decision to go to Rutgers, or another school such as Pitt, USP, Wilkes, or Duquesne.

sugarcookie,

  1. As a pharmacy student, I can assure you that students in Rutgers pharmacy are happy with their decision to be where they are. If you enjoy the field of pharmacy, EMSOP has innumerable resources to assist you along the way.
2)Trust me, if you enter the field of pharmacy with an intention to make money after 6 years, you will regret the decision (not just for Rutgers but for any pharmacy program).
  2. High school students sometimes enter PP1 with a money-making intention. That is one of the reason why many students drop out between pre-professional and professional years…pharmacy workload is an eye opener for them.
  3. Of course, pharmacy students interact with other fellow pharmacy majors and also students from other majors. I don’t agree with what njparent123 says that pharmacy students have unhealthy competition among themselves. I have never encountered a fellow pharmacy student rebuffing or condescending another student. In fact, many pharmacy students tend to study in groups for exams or quizzes. It really depends on how outward are you in making friends or study groups with fellow students.
  4. Professional years can be tough depending on your work ethic. Come on, this is a doctorate program…it is bound to be difficult. It all boils down to your management skills in regards to your classes. However, we do not “lock ourselves six hours in the library.” You will quickly learn how to juggle fun and studies.

6) Finally, and most importantly, Rutgers and EMSOP are what you try to gain from it. You will have to be proactive in taking the most advantages that the school offers. It all depends on YOU and your passion for pharmacy.

And again, you will be a HAPPY pharmacy student if you manage your studies well and take most advantages that Rutgers and EMSOP offers.

Hope it helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Just adding my opinion,
I’m a PP1 and am happy with my decision. A lot of my friends knew that they wanted to become pharmacists and applied just specifically to pharm programs. I applied to different schools with the intent of majoring in chemistry. I choose Rutgers knowing that if I hated the program I could switch or transfer. Now that I’m here, I actually love the program and everyone is pretty awesome.
Generally the course load isn’t that bad. I heard once you get to P2 it’s hard but the pre-professional years are not difficult. If you’re good at time management you’ll definitely have time to party and study. (Truthfully, I haven’t been to the library yet) Most pharmacy students study together and we really don’t try to make it a competition.

There really are no cons to pharmacy. Registering last pretty much sucks as a PP1 but there are some interesting classes :)
