Answering ALL Questions Related to Rutgers Pharmacy

I got in the day after i inputted my class rank to A&S and Engineering

still haven’t heard from pharmacy though

do i even have a shot

^ i think you have a good shot; good luck!

i have another question for anyone out there…
so i recently researched more into Rutgers and found that it’s a 0+6 program?! … that’s a good thing, right? because i had always thought it was not 0+6, that it was a 1 in 17 shot of getting into the Pharmacy program from the pre-pharmacy, or like a 6% acceptance rate or something…

then i received a letter from Rutgers, saying that you could transition into the last four years in Rutgers Ernest Mario so long as all courses are completed, GPA is greater than 2.8 (no C’s or lower in the sciences), and interview… and basically that was it.

perhaps i’m fooling myself, but the requirements didn’t seem incredibly extreme, which makes me question why the acceptance rate is so low as i had been told. any insight?

Yes, 0+6 programs are good things. The acceptance rate into the 0+6 program may be 6% (though I doubt it, Rutgers pharmacy isn’t as hard to get into as everyone thinks). The requirements aren’t very extreme, and if you keep up with your work, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t enter into the professional school during your third year.

However, its a lot easier said than done because the transition from high school to college work isn’t always easy, and the pharmacy course load is notoriously tough. Chemistry, Biology, and Organic Chemistry are all huge weed out courses at Rutgers. Not only that, but expository writing can be pretty tough depending on your teacher, and you’re always taking around 17-18 credits.

Its true that a lot of people drop out from freshman year to junior year (entrance into the pharmacy school), but this happens for a variety of reasons. Most people don’t know what they’re good at or what they want to do in high school, so it makes a lot of sense that people would either realize they’re not good at science, or really discover a passion in something else.

Lurker,

i know this must be very annoying for you, but i just wanted to get your opinion. i am ranked 2/500 and i have a tough course load, but i only scored in the low 1300s on my sat. do i even have a a chance? thank you

Hey, I recently received my acceptance to Rutgers Pharmacy and Rutgers SAS. I know I want to dorm on Busch Campus, but my friend who dorms there, got stuck in an all girls’ dorm. I was wondering which dorms were all girls and if there’s any way to not end up in one.

My son was accepted into the Pharmacy Program. He has a couple of questions/concerns. He loves science, high grades/comprehension, but he is extremly squeemish in terms of biology (eg disections, blood). It’s more of a visual thing which he is working to overcome but he gets overwhelmed currently. Is there a lot of this kind of thing in the Program? thanks

jlutley,

I don’t think you deal with dissections or blood in the Pharmacy School. You do deal with dissections in the 2nd semester of General Biology. You’ll actually dissect a pig probably at one point and there’s a few specimens that will be already dissected for students to study. There is no blood though and the lab is done in groups so your son doesn’t necessarily have to do an actual dissection.

^Lurker,

I don’t think the program has a 6% acceptance rate. If I remember correctly from orientation, around 3000 to 4000 students applied for Rutgers Pharmacy and around 600 got accepted, and they said something around a 20% acceptance rate. But of the 600, around 230 actually enrolled so total, 6% of applicants actually enrolled in the program.

thank you for your response see what he thinks

I applied in early november and still haven’t heard back.
3.8 UW 5.096 W 2200 SAT top 12%, still puzzles me. :T

rosie28: Yes, I’d say you do still have a chance. There are some people within my class who admitted to having somewhat low SAT scores.

jennyr: I’m guessing that your friend was in one of the Davidson dorms. It’s really not that bad…I have a number of friends there, and none of them mind it at all. In fact, they’re pretty close. There are multiple Davidson dorms. One is all-girls, one is all-boys, and the others are co-ed. They’re right next to each other, so it’s not like there aren’t any guys nearby. You can’t avoid getting into the all-girls dorm…it’s all chance.
One of my friends was EXTREMELY disappointed that he’d gotten into the all-guys dorm, but he loves it now.

joshyo: Some of my friends heard back pretty late too. Hang in there! :)

Whats the best campus to live on for pharmacy? Ive been leaning towards busch but im not sure… thanks in advance

Busch, if only because you’ll most likely meet the most pharmacy students there. It’s a nice campus…my favorite one, probably. The pharmacy school also suggests Livingston as another campus to live on because you’ll probably have a few classes there, but Busch is definitely nicer (bigger rooms, way better dining hall, less dreary overall). College Ave isn’t bad. It’s near all the cool shops and restaurants in downtown NB and a lot of clubs meet there, so it’s a convenient location despite also being where most parties take place (which is what makes it unappealing to some people, including me…but my friends who live there don’t seem to have many issues with it). Douglass is a nice campus and has the best dining hall, but it’s rather distant from the other campuses. If you’re a woman, it offers some amazing opportunities to get involved in science or research/generally get a head start that most people don’t hear about otherwise.

I’m biased toward Busch though. :P

Hello!
I just had question about changing majors.
I’m currently enrolled in SAS as undecided major.
But I really want to be part of the pharmacy program!
Is it hard to change to pharmacy major?
What’s the process of changing majors?

Thanks :)

accepteddd! finally the long wait is over! I wonder when merit scholarships start coming in though, it’s def gonna affect my decision…

How hard is it to maintain a 3.5 GPA in pharmacy? Im asking because i think thats what you need to maintain for the presidential scholarship which i really hope i can keep for all 4 years.

Last night i got accepted into Rutgers Pharmacy! yay
I have a few questions!

1) Does Rutgers Pharmacy give you a fair amount of financial aid? What kinds of scholarships (other than finanicial aid) are there? And when do i find out how much I actually have to pay?

2) When do i decide which dorms i’m gonna be? I heard i can actually choose my roommate. When can i do that? I really wanna have my friend as my roommate! Oh and do pharmacy students have the same dorm as other major students?

3) How hard do i need to work not to be kicked out from the program? Can you generally have some free time during the weekends, if not every night?

4) Is there an exam you have to take after graduating the 6 year program in order to get the degree of Pharm.D? how hard is it?

I’m really sorry for asking many questions!:frowning: but i’m sooooo excited that I got in! >_<
Thank you!

I also got into Rutgers Pharmacy! :]
Being an out-of-state student, I really don’t know anything about the housing at Rutgers.
I was wondering which dorms were the best to live in…
And are there any suite-style rooms at Rutgers?

There are lots of suites on Busch, especially (which as a pharmacy student, you should consider highly). As a freshman, though, you wouldn’t be able to live in a suite because only SAS honors freshmen get to live in McCormick Suites and pharmacy doesn’t have an honors program until two years in (I believe).

You are best off going for freshmen housing in the BAMM dorms (Barr, Allen, Metzger, Mattia). Barr and Mattia are for engineering, so that leaves Allen and Metzger. You don’t even get to choose a building on your housing application, so just put Busch as your first choice campus.

Even if you get put onto Livingston (which is where the majority of freshmen got placed this year), it’s not too bad.

Regarding choosing your roommate, yes, it is possible. You have a place in your housing application where you can put the name and RUID number of your desired roommate. Your roommate will have to do the same for you.

If you are in School of Pharmacy, are you going to be able to join orchestra??

1) Does Rutgers Pharmacy give you a fair amount of financial aid? What kinds of scholarships
(other than finanicial aid) are there? And when do i find out how much I actually have to pay?

Yes, though merit scholarships are more competitive. You will find out whenever you submit your FASFA and Rutgers decides to tell you how much they’re giving you - it varies by person and when you submit your FASFA

2) When do i decide which dorms i’m gonna be? I heard i can actually choose my roommate. When can i do that? I really wanna have my friend as my roommate! Oh and do pharmacy students have the same dorm as other major students?

You can choose your roommate; pharmacy majors live with all other majors; Freshman dorms on Busch would be your best bet.

3) How hard do i need to work not to be kicked out from the program? Can you generally have some free time during the weekends, if not every night?

Yes, you can get away with having a lot of free time depending on how intelligent (or not) you are.

4) Is there an exam you have to take after graduating the 6 year program in order to get the degree of Pharm.D? how hard is it?

Yes, a law exam and a pharmacy exam. Rutgers has a 90%+ pasisng rate for it. intern hour required vary by state.

If you are in School of Pharmacy, are you going to be able to join orchestra??
maybe a club orchestra; it is not likely that you would be able to join the rutgers symphony (which i believe is comprised of a lot of music majors) and still be able to keep up with schoolwork later on
