What’s the average income right after(at least within 2yrs) graduating from Rutgers 6-year Pharmacy Program?

Hi Lurker,

Thanks for taking the time to answers questions here. I am currently trying to transfer into the P1 year at Rutgers pharmacy. I have a BS in business from 1996 when I had a 3.1 GPA, but have take all my prerequisites at Bergen CC this last year and have a 4.0 there (with 67 credits) and a 97 PCAT composite. Very little in the way of community service/volunteering, pretty good essay I think. I know it is hard to get in as a transfer, but do you think

a) I have a good shot to at least get interviewed?

b) do you know how many seats are open for xfer this year?

I know they have taken between 10-40 xfers in past years, and though my grades/PCAT are good for most schools, I’m sure all of the xfers will have stellar stats.

Thanks for your help

hi,

does anybody have the waitlist stats for rutgers pharmacy? I just found out this morning and I’m sooo nervous.

If someone knows anything about it, I’d appreciate it so much if u let me know!

^desmo998,

I don’t have much an idea about transfers, all I know is that 2 years ago, around only 3 transfers from Rutgers got in. I have no idea about how many come from outside of rutgers. Though being a post-bacc, i think you definitely have an upper hand

^Heartsinparis

me too. I wonder what are our chances now. What’s your stats.

i have 1990 sat. 4.0 gpa.
i think the reason for my wait-listing is my critical reading score which is really low considering Im ESL.

anyway,
Good Luck to both of us.

Hi, Lurker. I have two questions.

Well, here’s a thing about me.
Right now I’m in high school somewhere around the world – and that is not in USA.
From what I’ve heard about Rutgers and its pharmacy program, the school doesn’t accept that many international students unless their stats are really good. I don’t think my GPA is that high (the grade measurement is not the same as in America). All I can tell is I’m in 18 (summing up all the subjects) out of 127. I’m going to work on getting better grades, preferablly at least in top 10%.

So, my question is, how many international students are in your class? And did they get in the school with really high stats?

I see latests post in Dec. I don’t know if you are keep checking this but if you answer asap, that would be very nice. Thanks.

Hi Lurker,

Thanks for creatig this thread, as it has helped me with a few of my questions already, but I was just wondering for Pharmacy, did you go into Pharmacy because you already had a general feeling you were into pharmacy because your father was a pharmacist, or did you just take a leap of faith and decide to do PrePharm?

I got accepted into the Pharm school back in december or so, and just recently got notified that I would receive 40k in merit scholarships over 4 years, but the only reason I planned to major in pharmacy was because I’m interested in chemistry and pharmacy seemed to be the quickest, wisest decision for me. So, is the pharmacy program actually more chemistry based and is it “fun” (for lack of a better term, sorry)?

Thanks

Likely to be rather high, considering pharmacists make 90-110k in almost all retail chains if they work 40 hrs/wk. Residency/Fellowship salaries may bring the average down, but people are doing it to further their education, so I don’t know if you want to count it or not.

I don’t know anything about transferring into Rutgers Pharmacy, but I can tell you that it is very competitive and that I know quite a few students who dropped out this year (those going into P1). Last year (current P1s), they accepted a lot of transfers, and I have met a few post-baccs like yourself.

I only know one international student, and I don’t know her well enough to know how intelligent she is/what her stats in high school were. Sorry; most students do come from NJ, I don’t even know that many out of state students.

I took a leap of faith and entered the pre-pharm program knowing that, if at any time I realized I didn’t like it, I could drop out. But yes, pharmacy is definitely very chemistry intensive - you’ll be taking general chemistry, general chemistry lab, organic chemistry, organic chemistry lab, pharmaceutical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, etc. etc. You’ll be taking at least one chemistry class almost every semester.

If chemistry is your forte and your passion, I would definitely give pharmacy a chance. Your other choice would have been to get a PhD. A PharmD is definitely more clinical than a PhD, but in the end it is up to you to decide what you think fits your career aspirations the best. If it were up to me, I would just stay in the Rutgers program for the first 2 years at least and take the time to explore. The pharmacy prereqs cover a lot of the chemistry major requirements anyways.

SAT2350: I actually had the same dilemma as you…violin was pretty much my life before. If you’re really interested, you can audition for the orchestra and just drop out later if you feel that you can’t keep up with it along with your academics. I think that it could be feasible during your freshman year. You probably wouldn’t be able to balance it very well afterwards (PP2 year gets a lot harder)…so if it’s really what you want, go for it.

mutilitum: There are actually quite a few international students in my class. I don’t know what their stats were though, sorry.

ohhhplease: It’s all about time management. PP1 year is quite manageable and you could easily have a lot of free time if you do things right. My upperclassman friend said that you should make the most of college during the first two preprofessional years, because after that pharmacy pretty much becomes your life.

Hey…I know that if you use AP Calc AB credits you still need to take Calc II instead. But what i use my AP calc BC credits? would i not have to take any math the 1st semester. I was also wondering if AP stat credits can be used for the statistics course in the second year?

Residency/Fellowship salaries may bring the average down??
What do you mean by that?

Also, is PharmD different from Pharmacist?(I heard PharmD is like a doctor??!)

How hard is PP2?? how many hours a day do you study??

pvan92: Yes, if you use Calc BC credits, you won’t have to take any calc class. I’m fairly sure that AP Stat credits will count for the stat course. You’ll see for sure when they send out the letter asking you what AP credits you want to use.

Just AP out of Bio or Chemistry … don’t ask questions, just do it. Ask around if you don’t believe me.

Some people pursue a residency or a fellowship to further their training. While in residency, you don’t get paid as much.

A PharmD is not the same as a pharmacist. In order to be a pharmacist you need to pass your state law exam and the NAPLEX in order to become an RPh (Registered Pharmacist).

PP1 is not hard; nor is PP2 particularly challenging. There is no class that you can’t do well in if you put in enough time / effort.

What about getting cr. for Physics Class @ Mario Pharm. if we take AP Physics “C” (Mechanics) and get @ least a “4”…and can you satisfy the Stats requirements w. AP Stats grade of “4” or better…i.e., can AP Stats fulfill the Stats Research requirment @ Mario? Thanks for your response Lurker.

You guys can AP credit whatever you want, but I’m telling you chemistry and biology are going to be the hardest classes you encounter that you can AP out of.

Economics is easy; physics is easy, especially if you can AP out of it (which proves that you are proficient); Calculus, if you AP out of you have to take calc 2 (and if you can AP out of calculus, again you’re proficient. FYI: Calc II is notoriously difficult); statistics is easy; etc.

Chemistry and/or Biology are going to be your most challenging classes in the first two years aside from Organic Chemistry and Systems Physiology, which you can’t AP out of anyways. That’s why I’m suggesting you use your credit on those two classes - organic chemistry uses almost no knowledge of general chemistry (that I know of anyways), and biology doesn’t have any material extremely relevant to systems either.

I WISH I COULD place out of Bio or Chem, but only got “3’s” on each exam and that’s why I am trying to place out of the Calc. (having already gotten “4’s” on both AB and BC) and currently taking AP Physics and AP Stats (now hoping to get a “4’s” on May’s exam). Also, I understand that one can only use 2 courses to place out of, so in my case will use for Calc. and either Physics or Stats. Btw, do I still need to take a math placement exam even if I successfully finished Calc. I and II? Thanks Lurker for your time and patience…appreciate it. Is Bio @ Rutgers the same as h.s. AP Bio?

Hi My question wasn’t answer before… so can anyone answer this?

Hello!
I just had question about changing majors.
I’m currently enrolled in SAS as undecided major.
But I really want to be part of the pharmacy program!
Is it hard to change to pharmacy major?
What’s the process of changing majors?

Thanks :)

I hope u can ans. my q’s. ag…so I have completed Calc. AB and BC w. “4’s” on AP exams and will use that for Calc. requirement @ Rutger Pharm., however, I did NOT score well enough either on AP Chem or AP Bio to place out, therefore, want to know then if AP Physics “C” or AP Stats (now taking exams in May w. the hopes of getting “4” or higher) could be used to satisfy either Physics or Stats. Research (in 2nd yr.) course requirements. So what would you do – get outa Physics or Stats…wish I could place outa the Bio., but did not score high enough. Help, and also can I get outa taking Math placement exam since I am finished w. AP Calc AB and BC … plz. advise, and you don’t know how much I appreciate the time you take to answer all these q’s…you’re the best!

starkling: See this website for information about transferring to the pharmacy school from another school in RU NB: http://pharm.rutgers.edu/files/C-to-C_NB.pdf

spunkygirl: Yes, those two AP exams would work. I’d definitely get out of physics (harder than stat and also has a lab component). The only part of the placement test you can get out of is the verbal part (if you have 600+ on the CR section of the SATs), but the math section really isn’t difficult at all (pretty much all you need to know is basic arithmetic and algebra). Since you’ve taken AP Calc, you should be fine.

do you enjoy rutgers? i’m still a little in between university of michigan pharmacy and rutgers pharmacy but i plan on staying in the ny/nj region after college and also umich is extremely expensive. my mom thinks it would be a bad decision to go to rutgers instead but i think both pharmacy programs are really good. does rutgers prepare you well for a license?
