Answering Questions about Housing/Overall Opinions from a current Freshman

Yup, Trojan's really convenient. It's just the large amount of money left over at the end of the semester that kinda sucks.

I have heard that New/North is known for its partying and such. But I also know that there is a business floor in North. Is that also rowdy?
Also, what is safety like in the dorms?

i've heard many stories involving blood and vomit at new north. that frightens me...just a lil bit.

haha bluebeard, you totally turned me off new/north by telling me about the blood on aim

my choices for housing turned out to be very similar to yours

bluebeard: Can you expand on the blood/vomit?

^ lol well I don't know about blood (I'm sure bluebeard could tell you about that), but I've heard from plenty of my friends in New/North that people vomit all over the place (hallways, rooms) after partying and drinking too much. Maybe they're exaggerating, but... I haven't heard of any vomiting in any of the other buildings :)

well when people are drunk they lack...well, coordination. a girl at my school got drunk, tripped over a speaker and tore her ACL (oddly enough i tore mine a week later; there were 5 ACL tears that year at my high school; bad year). so yeah, if there are a bunch of drunk people in a small room, some accidents are going to happen. not that you're in great danger by living in new/north, i just prefer not to collect an assortment of body fluids on my belongings.

Haha wow this is spiraling out of control...
1st to chewishgirl...the Business floor is well still a part of New/North so it has its loudness to it the girls parts of the floors are always a little quiter than the guys just for obvious reasons and as of right now the specific "business floor wing" on 2nd floor North is kinda rowdy but then again it depends on the people who live there.

2nd to bluebeard...Umm yeah it's true people throw up but thats a part of sickness and health, and as of blood I've heard of some accidents happening where people get hurt and bleed obviously but other than that its not as though you'll just be walking through piles of blood and puke every time people party. It's overly falsified.

true, but i consider myself a romantic.

thanks TCannonT05, looks like Birnkrant will be my first choice.
crazy business kids

TCannonT05..hi...im majorin in Finance; and most of my classes are in Popovich and Hoffman Halls which on the map seems reeeaally far from Fluor...

i need clean bathrooms, and AC...so my first choice was fluor...(the lounge on each floor with a micro-oven and stove is also nice to have)

can any1 tell me how far fluor really is from Hoffman and Popovich Halls?

I also need some info on Century Apartments, Parkside, and the new Humanities and Arts Building..

Is there an area where the engineers tend to stay? Enginerring class loads are brutal so I know at most schools they stay away from the party dorms.

is there a difference between new and north? is one better than the other? I am submitting my housing today and i was just wondering which one should be my first choice.

I just got a question.. when I'm trying to pay my $30 housing fee, it says "Your payment failed for the following reason: Payment verification timed out. "
what can I do? thank you

hmm, it seems like a lot of engineers stray towards IRC (aka parkside) and marks' hall. But I know engr. guys who have been in essentially all of them.

couple of questions:

I know quite a lot of people are considering sending in their housing application already...would mid april still give you a decent chance of getting your choices? I'll be visiting the campus then.

Also, which is the best place for a social sciences major? My top choices are Birnkrant and Fluor...

MrxPenguin the same problem is happening to me i at least tried it 10 times throughout the day yesterday

check your cookies settings. make sure your cookies aren't timing out too soon. if that doesn't work, try redoing the whole process quick enough so that your session doesn't time out.

How is Marks Hall compared to Trojan Hall? Is it equally cramped/dark/warm? And is Marks Hall single-gender floors? Are there any disadvantages to living in a Dean's Hall?

Also, what is the difference between mixed-sex floors and single-sex floors social-wise? Do single-sex floors tend to be less social?

AND one more: If I'm the type of person who has to study in a quiet place, but still wants a social dorm, would Birnkrant be a good fit for me?

Some answers to your question. I personally like Marks more than Trojan, but then again, that's where I lived. To me, Trojan always felt more like a jail, for some strange reason. I have a feeling that the trojan rooms are far more uniform than the Marks rooms, mainly because it feels like it is a newer building. Marks is single gender floors, as there are only two. My year, the guys lived on the second floor, and the girls on the third. It was nice, although you didn't want to spend too much time on the guys floor- it smelled funny.

If you are a partier, or very loud, you probably won't like the Dean's Halls as much. While the people there do go out to party, very rarely are the parties actually where you are living. Also, a more quiet atmosphere is present, meaning you are able to study in your room quite easily. This isn't the rule all of the time, of course. We'd fit fifteen girls (and some guys) into one room every week to watch Grey's Anatomy. That was never quiet, but always fun.

I don't really know the difference between the mixed sex and single sex floors. It is nice to be able to walk around in a towel without worrying too much. I don't know much social wise about it.

I don't really know much about Birnkrant. You would probably like it, but I have no first hand experience. The main thing I would like to emphasize is that the Dean's Halls are not socially bankrupt. Lots of fun happens there, but generally not in a way that involves as much alcohol (especially on the girls floor- more with the guys that I personally saw). It really depends on the group of people there that particular year.
