Answering Questions from International Students Here!

Ask each school INDIVIDUALLY.

You need to send 9-12th or 9-11 or in rare cases (ucs) 10-11. If it’s 7-9or nothing, then send it all. Math should indicate if it’s calculus.

Thanks…i took calculus in 10th grade and i’m also taking it in 11th grade

Hey , i took the SAT for the first as a junior last june and i didnt really practice anything and recieved 460 writing , 450 reading and 500 Mth. Now im retaking the SAT after practicing and im expecting about 1800’s , so do you know any good private colleges that will have high scholarships with that SAT score?

No college will have high scholarships for that SAT score.
What’s your parents’ budget?
Note to all applicants: Taking a test without studying for it is a waste of time and money.

I disagree. Most American students have many opportunities to take test similar in style to the SATs (for example the PSATs). Many overseas students will not. If the money is not a factor, there may indeed be an advantage to taking the SAT speculatively, if only so that you understand the experience.

& I disagree the other way

My D’s were not raised in the US, and SATs / APs / SATIIs were the first (and only) standardized tests they ever took. But they took practice tests (paper and online) to get familiar with the formats and studied the content outlined on CollegeBoard sites.

I often see posters say oh, I took it without studying, which (imo) says that they weren’t taking it seriously and/or they are trying to justify a low score (and very occasionally humble bragging). Like MYOS1634, I don’t understand a student taking a test to try and get ‘high scholarships’ (as with the poster in #123) who says they didn’t bother to study for the test.

I agree with collegemom3717; many countries-assuming they are not underdeveloped-do have ways to practice SAT?ACT by going to private institute or simply buying books and studying on their own. I, too, took SAT as the only first standardized test in my life, but I practiced A LOT on my own.

i want to pursue computer science. my parents can provide only upto 12000$ a year and my sat score is 2090.I have decent Ec’s and a 3.3 GPA.Which universities should i apply to?
Is it any use giving the Toefl and sat subject tests?

Retake the Sat to get 2100 or 1400cr+m to open all kinds of scholarship opportunities not available for 2090- just 10pts, thousands and thousands of dollars in difference!!
Yes, take the toefl (often required) and if you can take 2subject tests in your favorite subjects plus one in a different area ( especially if you take math2+science, take a humanities test.)
What area of the world are you from?

my high school gpa is 89%…it sounds low but I rank top 3 in my class …do I have a chance at harvard college…I

I also think I can get a perfect score on the new sat with practice…I took a practice test without studying and got a 1500/1600

With this rank and SAT score, you’d make the first cut, but the rest depends on your essays, recommendations, and extracurricular activities.

I’m sorry for these stupid questions, but the common app is killing me, and I need some guidances.

  1. Is the common app fee waiver available for international students? Some thread says yes; others says no; the FAQ is completely unhelpful.
  2. Is there a restriction on the length of the essays?
  3. Teachers probably don’t know enough English to write recs. Can I translate the recs?
  4. I understand that for the US students, transcripts and school reports are usually sent directly to the college applied. What about international students? Does my college have to send them directly, or do I need to send them myself?
  5. Current college doesn’t have a counsellor, nor an advisor, for that matter. What should I do?
  1. Yes, there are several ways to do it; through college board waiver or Common App waiver signed by your counselor. 2) Yes, it depends on prompt
  2. No, you can’t do it on your own. Ask colleges. Either they will translate it for you or they will ask you to use 3rd party translating company.
  3. Are you already in college of your country?

so it doesn’t matter if my gpa looks low…although its considered excellent in my high school

I have a question about fee waiver also:
Actually, I requested a Common App fee waiver from my high school conselor. Do accepting my request means that I would not pay application fees?

What??? You are the one request fee waiver. How can you “accept” something you REQUESTED?

Anyway, if t’s approved, than you are not paying fee

OMG Sorry, I mean if the conselor accept it…

Yes, if counselor signs it, then it’s all set up.
