I really like Northwestern; I just have numerous worries. I have heard the chemistry courses for pre med are killer! Are there other aspects, aside from typical pre med hurdles, that make NU's pre med extremely difficult? Is it common for non science majors to do pre med at Northwestern?

I’m not sure about the other questions but I would say go for the anthropology major. Again, I can’t speak specifically for Northwestern but I think having a non-science major as a pre-med student is becoming more common/desirable…and if its any help, I know a student at Northwestern’s med school who specifically majored in anthropology

Yeah, a lot of pre-meds arent science majors. A close friend of mine is econ/pre-med.

The reason they are so tough is the reason basically all pre-med courses across the country are tough, the curve is super rough and so is just the monstrosity of material you have to learn in orgo and bio.

My Dad has a friend who was on the Columbia Med School Admissions Board for quite a long time. Since I am a pre-med student, my dad as asking him a few questions, specifically about majors. This guy basically said that Med Schools love to see students with different, non-science majors because generally speaking, pre-med and hard core science students are narrow minded to just science. Basically, they like to see someone bring something new to the table, and so long as you take the pre-med courses (chemistry, specifically organic, is possibly the most important premed course. Get an A in that one), score well on the MCATs, and have a good GPA, then no matter what your major, you are a good candidate.

Best of luck!

Many NU pre-meds take organic chemistry over the summer at an easier school. I’m not sure how this looks to top med schools but I can tell you that it’s relatively common. I also know a girl who is an anthropology pre-med student who was just accepted to med school.
