hey guys, I just got this e-mail regarding the future of the anthro program:

The statement has been approved for distribution by both the Dean and the Provost's office.

The University has suspended access to the Anthropology degree programs for a one-year time period. What this means is that students will not be able to enter into the majors under the number 110510.

Rationale
As a consequence of the University’s recent budget reduction, the Department of Anthropology is part of a restructuring taking place within the College of Arts and Sciences. Because the University’s budget situation has not yet stabilized, the Administration has decided to suspend access to the existing degree programs for one year.

Consequences for Undergraduate Students
We anticipate that students at the junior and senior levels will have up to two years to complete their degree requirements, independent of the specific changes that result from restructuring. In other words, our intention is to provide the upper-level course offerings for the next two years. Students should not assume that upper-level Anthropology courses would be available as options after two years. Recent entries into the Anthropology major should plan accordingly.

Consequences for Graduate Students
Masters degree students will have two years to complete their degree requirements. Ph.D. degree students who are late in their degree programs should plan to finish within two years. Early stage Ph.D. degree students should explore transferring or changing to another degree program.

I'm a junior, summer 09 anthro major transfer and im quite concerned about this. I haven't even been able to pick classes yet, since summer transfers are only allowed to do so well into july...Will I be able to find any anthro courses? I'm in miami atm, so im not able to visit the school for any information. Reaching the department by phone has been a huge hassle, so i'm pretty much in the dark about this. Does anybody have any more info on this? thanks in advance...

Go to registrar.fsu.edu and click on course look-up and check out the class offering. You will see what actual classes are there, both full and with seats available.

Correct. Currently, you can take anthropology classes, but cannot declare it as a major unless you have been at FSU and already majoring in it, and just have to finish out 1-2 years. The status could change if funding changes. I do not know about it’s status as a minor. But generally if it is not a major, you can’t minor in it. There will be no MAP’s for anthropology. You can still take classes and show by your transcript an interest in the field.

I do not know how they handle if you are a transfer just beginning summer or fall 09 and want to major in it. You have to call for that info.

Oh wow, I just read that FSU had their 60+ year Dedman School of Hospitality on the chopping block! D would have been devasted if she had been accepted only to later find out that the major was eliminated.

D was eventually accepted into UCF’s Rosen School of Hospitality, where she is at now starting with Summer sessions. So glad she won’t have to spend 4 years at FSU worrying if they will eventually eliminate her major. The Hospitality and Golf Management programs at FSU were highly regarded, such a shame.

FSU’s School of Hospitality IS still highly regarded. Much more than UCF’s program, or any program in the south for that matter. It has not been eliminated and will now become an independent program.

IMO, FSU will never eliminate such a prestigious and world-renowned program.

This is not just an FSU problem, is a state-funded university problem. The flagships schools(UF and FSU) will have to make some financial adjustments, but the regional/commuter schools (UCF, USF, FIU etc.) will be getting hit the hardest.

All eleven Florida state universities have been hit hard by funding drops. No university was immune. Some of the universities maybe softened this year’s financial hits by preparing earlier for anticipated drops in available money for operations.

Even though this year they did not terminate the Hospitality program (as proposed in April), I would be concerned about the future of this program at FSU. Why did they even CONSIDER terminating it?

can you guys take your “hospitality program” talk elsewhere? Anthropology may not be a lucrative major but it is 100x more intellectually stimulating than hospitality. FSU is making a big mistake by neglecting this program and putting others ahead of it. I don’t know of any other school in the state eliminating this program. anybody?

edit: thanks sunnyflorida for your reply; the fsu blackboard is slightly different from my old school’s.
