Anthropology schools?

I've been looking into schools with Anthropology departments and I was wondering if anyone could help me. Which ones are the best out of my list (and could you suggest others)? I have to notify College Board by Nov. 15th of the colleges I want my score report sent to (and as the 1st four are free, I want to take them up on it.)

Thanks!!

My list so far:

~University of Pittsburgh
~Northwestern
~Georgetown University
~American University
~Barnard College
~Mercyhurst*
~Muhlenburg*

*not so sure about these two, yet :)

Comments and suggestions welcome! :)

I can answer some questions about Mercyhurst, if you like.

It’s a small private liberal arts school located in Erie, PA. If you aren’t familiar with Erie, PA its a city about the size of 100,000. It’s about 1 1/2 - 2 hours from Pittsburgh, 1.5 hours from Cleveland, OH, and 1.5 hrs from Buffalo, NY.

The campus would be considered urban/suburban, however it’s very private. It’s not urban like Pitt. It’s in a much more calm setting, not far from downtown which has a pretty good bar/college scene. Good shopping areas, casino, cheap bars, outdoor recreation, and minor league sports.

Winters are tough there…lots of snow. However, fall and summer are awesome - tons of stuff to do out on the lake if you enjoy those sorta things.

I can’t give you real specific information about their Anthropology program, but I can say it is very well respected. The head of the department, Dr. Dirkmaat is a world recognized expert in Forensic Anthropology/Archeology, and consults for governments and law enforcement. I’m told his students get involved with some of these assignments as well, but I can’t give any examples. I know he has done alot of recovery/reconstruction for crashed airliners, including United Flight 93.

Now, this “cool stuff” is probably for people enrolled in the Masters Program, not undergrad.

Also, if you are interested in going for your Masters/PHD, you’d be better off doing undergrad in Biology or Chemistry.

Concerning Pitt, I know they have a good program as well. I just don’t know lots of details.

Of the schools in your list, Northwestern and Barnard are the strongest academically. Both of them also have strong anthropology depts. Barnard students can draw on the resources of Columbia, as well.

There are many other schools with strong anthropology depts. It depends on what you’re looking for in a school–size, location, region, cost, etc. as well as if you have interests in particular subfields of anthropology, world regions, etc.

Among LACs, for example, Beloit reportedly has a good anthropology dept. Duke is strong, especially in biological anthropology. There are many more.

Also, are Northwestern//William and Mary’s depts. good?
