Anxiety about college

I’ve had a miserable start to high school getting an 83 overall gpa freshman year. Starting out terribly sophomore year with a 75 gpa bounced back this semester with a 90. I’m going to keep a steady 90-93 gpa should I be worried about not getting into colleges like oneonta, Buffalo, Albany, geneseo, New Paltz,Binghamton, and buffalo state as a prospective geography major. Am I screwed or am I ok?

Colleges like to see an upward trend. If you improve, then you have a very good shot. Geography major is also less competitive (I would be one if STEM wasn’t so hype in the job field).

Some of those schools are far more competitive than others.

Of the schools on your list, Geneseo is probably most difficult in terms of admission; Buffalo State is probably easiest. A lot will depend on your SAT/ ACT scores.

Should you be worried? No, because worrying is a waste of energy. Keep the upward trend, and add a true safety that you like and would be happy to attend. I do think you will get into at least a couple of those schools, though Bing and Geneseo will be reaches for sure.

Your test scores will impact on your chances of admission, though I tend to agree with the posters above who feel that Bing and Geneseo will be reaches for you. Buffalo State is a good choice if it has the program you want. Oneonta can feel rural and isolated unless that’s what you want.

Take a look at the SUNY.edu site. It allows you to see the scores and grades each school looks for, including the top and bottom quartiles and the mid-50% range. You can also search by program or major.

What can I do to improve my chances to schools like geneseo and Binghamton. And is buffalo as competitive as these two what about Albany and New Paltz

As suggested above, you need to look at some of the data from these colleges. See how your stats fall in terms of their accepted students. You have to do some research. To improve your chances, study hard for the SAT or ACT. Keep up your grades. Get good teacher recommendations. Stop stressing and instead be proactive.
