Any advice for a prospective penn '09er?

i could really use some imput from the people on this forum. i was accepted to a few schools, but am most seriously considering upenn and uchicago. i know they’re different, but i like them both. uchicago seems to have an awesome atmostphere and the people seem great, although i have heard they study a lot (which is okay with me). i am worried that penn is too much of a party school, and while i like to have fun, just drinking is not my idea of a good time. at the same time, it seems penn is more diverse and active on campus. can anyone tell me what they think penn is like socially, and how it stacks up academically? what should i do? thank you in advance for your imput!

anyone? anyone?!

Penn is big enough that you can find your own niche. I'm sure there are folks that party 7 nights/week and others that study every free moment they have.

yes, i have one: don't go

Just kidding, i am just jealous b/c i didn't get in, ha ha.
good luck people and have fun :)

Go to Penn. You'll have plenty of time to study. Work hard, then play hard. You gotta remember--Penn may be more social compared to the other Ivies, but just look at who is in THAT group.

The kids at any college party and have fun--it's part of the experience. Penn is not a party school, it's just more NORMAL than some of its peer institutions. Plus, all those Penn "partiers" are also damn smart.

it's funny that penn's called a party school... cuz it's really not... lol maybe in the ivies... but that's pretty sad, that said, philly is awesome and more than makes up for the lack of party scene*

I'll just say that the dorms at Penn are way better than those at UChicago, or so I've heard. The thing I love about Penn is that it has so many schools and you can take classes interchangedly. My brother goes there and he takes classes from CAS and Wharton and they never gave him any trouble about it. There's a lot of time to have fun and go party, and Philadelphia itself is GREAT. Plus you have the King of Prussia mall closeby!

Caths2005, I'm so glad you brought up the topic! I'm also debating between UChicago and Penn (also considering Duke) at the moment and I really like both of them for extremely different reasons. I'm still thinking hard about this but I'm more inclined to Penn at the moment.

here2insanity--are you going to visit? i'm visiting next week. i'll be glad to give you my impressions if you don't have a chance to go out there! as of right now, what are the pros and cons for you for each school?

Oh I wish I could visit!! It's too far a trip for me to make from Singapore :P but if you can tell me what you think of the campus afterwards, that will really help me. Thanks! Hey do you have msn or aim? maybe we can chat about these schools sometime.

johnny879, that's one of the funniest things I've read in CC.

Good job.

You get the J. Liz Cool People Award.

what johnny879 said right. Penn is not exactly a party school in my eyes. Now Penn State, UDell...THEY are party schools. From what I hear from kids who go to Penn, it's study during the week and party on weekends.

here2insanity--i'm going to visit this week, and i'll get back to you as soon as i return. good luck making a decision!
