Any advice for PittStart?

Should my daughter try to do the earliest session available? Should I go with her or is that not cool? :D Any suggestions would be appreciated!

From our experience, I'd say earlier is better. I heard my daughter's roommate say that she'd heard that the very early sessions were already filled.

My husband and I went along for Pittstart. We stayed at the Holiday Inn, wandered and went on Parent events, saw our daughter about one quarter of the time. It seemed to work out okay.

My d attended a July session and that worked out fine. She had a great time, selected her classes and participated the programs and events. She stayed in Towers, we stayed at the Hampton Inn and took advantage of the Pittstart parent tours. However, we did not see her at all. There really is no reason for you to be there, unless of course, you would like to be there.

Go to the earliest available session to have more course and time selections. I went to the PittStart and there were parents there. Meetings and activities are available to both students and parents, so I think you could reasonably go without being un-cool.

nurse123,

So your D didn't have any problem getting the classes she needed in nursing by going to the PittStart in July? Did she end up with any strange times (really early or late classes) My D is going the end of July because she wants her AP scores back before she signs up for classes. She's hoping to get out of English and Stats. She already took Psych and Sociology post secondary here at the local U so she wants to see what other classes she may be able to fit in.

Stowmom,

We found Pitt was great about giving credits.

My daughter did post-secondary at Kent, and Pitt gave her credit for everything, even Oceanography which Pitt doesn't offer! She did get out of freshman English with two semesters of English she took at KSU.

She also got AP credit--credit for Calc 1 w/ a 4 on the AP test, credit for Bio 1 w/ 4 AP.

when was that? they have atleast one oceanography course now. probably gonna take it for my natural science requirement

Thanks for all the advice! My daughter registered for a session in late June and will stay on campus for the evening. I will go with her, just for the fun of it.

my d did not have any trouble getting classes. nursing school makes sure that nursing courses are selected. she had a bit of trouble with electives, as she couldn't take her first choice - but I think that would be a problem for any freshman student. they were very helpful in finding her electives to fit her schedule- the nursing schedule is very tight and there is not much flexibility with labs and required courses

there are so many classes available that no matter when you go, you will have no problem finding plenty of classes that pique your interest or fill requirements.

At our older daughter's school we were concerned about the classes filling up with early orientation dates. The way it was explained at University of Delaware was that a number of slots are given to each session so it's not first come first served. Seems only fair especially with the honors classes. Does Pitt operate in a similar fashion?

I don't think they do in general; however, I do know that the engineering school will have reserved slots in their required courses for the engineering students. Sometimes a section of a general course will even be entirely engineering students. But I believe CAS courses generally fill on a first-come-first-served basis, so you would probably have more choice of class times if you went to an earlier PittStart.
