Any Advice On A Back-to-School Style?

I've always been a Jeans N' T-Shirt Girl. I feel that my choice of clothing has made me not stand out as much as I wanted to. I'm a 16 year old black girl and I want some ideas of types of styles I could tryout and wear. Only problems are I'm kind of Fashion-Impaired and don't know the first thing about wear to buy nice outfits or how to pair up things. I'm also not the ideal body weight either, I'm a little overweight.

Thanks Guys

coming from a t-shirt n jeans guy, haha
go shopping with a few friends, just pick out cute tops and whatever, try forever 21. you can start with cardigans, they look pretty nice wearing them with a t-shirt, tank, whatever

Full plate armor and broadsword. I mean… you wanna be remembered right?

Miniskirt/short shorts and a low neckline. Every. Time.

Try dresses! They’re simple and IMO harder to mess up than pants w/ top w/ sweater. They’re also very big this year. However, make sure you use with discretion…Forever 21 dresses can be a little bit out there

Check out lookbook.nu. Most of the girls on that site are crazy skinny and are wearing outfits that would look terrible on 95% of the population, but you can find some great ideas there.

Or check out the magazine Nylon for some very unique, quirky fashion inspiration if you’re into a more urban style.

Also, try going to thrift stores! I used to never go but I’ve started to love them recently. You’ll have to do a bit of digging but it’s awesome finding something that’s cheap, fits you perfectly, and is incredibly unique!

Forever 21 is terrible quality, by the way. I hate it more and more every time I go in. H&M is much classier and better quality and about the same price range.

Bump. Bump. Bump.

Skinny jeans and flowy tops always work.

urban ballerina [flowy feminine tops in muted hues, flats, skinny jeans etc.] is nice.

I luurv dresses too. they’re the easiest outfit :D

Forever21
Urban Outfitters
American Apparel
Charlotte Russe
H&M
Abercrombie and Fitch
Hollister

Check their websites and look at their pictures.

Also, I’m not trying to single out black people or anything, but you should stay away from neon colors which are too flashy in comparison to your skin and I always see a lot of black people wearing such neon colors and it just doesn’t look all that good.

^neon colors look good on hardly anyone. except maybe asians. sometimes. i can’t wait until this neon thing passes.

As a black person, I hate to say this but: dark people need to leave bright ass colors ALONE.

TRUFFLIEPUFF, Do all those stores carry brands that will fit me? I’m not huge but I’m not sure if they carry my size.

you’re black?

I semi agree. White is okay though. Just none of the bright green/yellow/pink stuff.

Yeah, but most people think I’m only half.

I second lookbook.nu and also suggest chictopia! You can go into thrift stores and buy some pieces that could help you build looks inspired by some of those posts.

For me, places like Forever 21, AE, Hollister… too expensive to shop regularly. I also suggest you could go into the back of some of those stores and check out clothes that they’re throwing away or donating and see if you can get something for cheap. I got a really cute dress for like $3 at AE. It was hidden in the back because it was too old or something.

OH ROSS!! ROSS ROSS ROSS! Best store ever.

Bump. Bump. Bump.

Bump. Bump. Bump.

I think that turquoise and white or cream look beautiful on people with darker skintones.
