Work hard and long on your application. Really think about what kind of interest you have in the hospitality industry, and how the experience you have is UNIQUE (key word being unique). Just saying that you worked in a hotel or restaurant isn’t special because 1) everyone can apply for and have a job like that and 2) everyone will do it again here. So when writing your supplement (arguably the most important part besides your interview [if you choose to do one]), think about what you want to write, why it’s important, and picture yourself in the steps of a Hotel School student at Cornell.

PS: don’t be afraid to be creative in your approach, in fact I think that creativity is more appealing than just saying you’ve worked in a hotel all your life. If you are able to see that hospitality is literally EVERYTHING and can convey that in your essay and experiences, then you’re in.

A lot of students who come to the hotel school come here because they were born into the industry and have family in hotels, restaurants, whatever it may be. So if you don’t have this background, use it to your advantage in describing how your outside perspective can contribute to the overall hospitality business.

The important part to remember is that it’s not impossible, but just think about it long and hard before you submit your application. Once it’s done it’s done, and then you’ll get your decision soon enough…
