Any applicants/interested students have questions?

i’m thinking of applying for transfer to SU and i was wondering, do you think it would be hard for a transfer to fit in? are students generally friendly/eager to make friends?

also, how prevalent is greek life, really? do you think that you can have a good time without going greek? will you be “looked down” upon if you don’t go greek?

^ this is not referring to syracuse but my sister, who transfered from NYU to Fordham.

She transfered in the fall of of sophomore year and nobody even noticed that she was new.

she made friends in an instance.

college really goes by making friends in classes so everybody is eager to make friends in every new class they take, since theres like 10,000 undergraduates in one school lol.

you will have NO problem making friends.

kilijin, The honors program here is called Renee Crown for Arts & Sciences students.

likeme, I think that depends on your personality, but then again like kingsta said, it’s pretty easy to make friends with people in college. Most people here are extremely nice, but if you’re not sociable then you can forget about it. Given the fact that your asking this question, im assuming your pretty sociable so I don’t think this is a problem. I know everyone wants to meet new people. Trust me when I tell you, it gets old hanging out with the same people every weekend even though you could love them all to death. Greek life is pretty prevalent. I THINK the stat is that 40% of SU students go greek. Much of the nightlife at SU depends on the greeks. You can definitely find ways to have a good time without them, but only to a certain point. And there are weekends where even I find myself avoiding the frats, but there’s no way I could do that every weekend because that also gets old pretty quickly.

Hey I’m from southern California, nearish to LA. Thinking of transferring to SU. I know its a huge change climate wise, time wise and all that yada. But what do you know about the business school, Whitman, tough, cutthroat, etc…
You say ppl are nice thats cool, I’m not anti social quiet kid though, for the most part. How hard is it for a southern californian kid to fit in?
Hows the city?
I’d be a sophomore next fall, it says first two year students freshman and sophomore live on campus (required) I was thinking should I apply to live in the transfer housing or should I just apply to live with all the returning freshman?
How to frat parties work? excuse the naiveness but are you able to just stroll in or do you have to be invited by frat members, not entirely sure.
Is SU worth transferring to?
(Thanks for the post only one about SU up here, really want to get in, was waitlisted then denied last year, so reapplying for next year)

quick question about engineering and ischool.

how hard are they to get into compared to the other schools?
what’s the courseload like and are students supportive of each other (academic help, learning communities, etc)? are classes taught by prof or grad student ta’s? or are the engineering students in the library and their rooms studying all weekend?

the programs at both schools look really good but wondering how these students do on campus.

much thanks!

I have a 3.7 with a 1140 core on my SATs. Also lots of extras including varsity sports and tour guide at my school. I also attend a solid private school. Are my odds good getting into the arts and science school at cuse if i went ED?

lmao dam okay…

rcwhite- One of my best friends here @ SU lives in the Bay Area. The adjustment is weird at first, but he got use to it. Whittman is great! Idk if uve seen the latest rankings, but I believe it’s at number 6 in the nation . I suggest living with whoever you want. The campus is extremely accepting, and the school is so large that even returning sophmores are going to meet new people. It’s really just a matter of whatever you prefer. haha Greek life gets more complicated by the day for freshman BOYS around here. Originally, you could get into a party as long as you had a 2-1 ratio–that is, 2 girls for every one boy. NOW they changed it so that you could have 100 girls but if they don’t like u they wont let u in. If they don’t care u pay 5 bucks. OR they may just have too many freshman. HOWEVER, if u no some brothers you can get yourself and girls in. Sometimes, they’ll let u bring in 1 or 2 of ur guy friends, but most frats gave that up to. SU is DEFINITELY worth transfering to. Yes, my opinion is biased but i LOVE it here and wouldn’t ever wanna leave! And it’s np!

beaglegal, from what I know, the engineering program is pretty legit here, but it only to a certain extent. The reason i say that is because the “great” programs are Newhouse, Architecture, and Whittman which are tops in the nation (And SPM is on it’s way too =) ). From what my friends in engineering say, it’s tedious stuff, something that should be expected for any aspiring engineering major. I don’t know too many people in ischool, but it’s generally the same thing. The Majority of the classes are profs, but u will have an occasional class with the TA’s. Students are students, I couldn’t really tell you how you’d do.

Ctracy, Id say your in because of ur high GPA and ur EC’s, Especially if ur applying ED. Good Luck!!

thanks for the info! sounds like both schools are trying to live up to the other ones. they announced programs with jp morgan and ibm (green computing).

su has major ranked programs/colleges and raising up the others. don’t know why more people latch onto SU? great programs, ops and the orangemen! what more could you ask for! ok - it’s the frozen tundra, but don’t they have heated sidewalks, major shoveling and good bus network? they know how to handle the cold and snow.

hoping to hear good news and good luck to all!

“don’t know why more people latch onto SU?”

bG1: shhhhhh

I’m planning to apply for the Syracuse architecture program. It’s now ranked no. 2 in the nation, and that means it will be harder to get into this year than before. Even if I’m rejected from the School of Architecture, can I still be admitted into the school itself?

Also, if I applied to Newhouse or the Comm design program at the school of VPA as a second choice, would that hinder my chances at the architecture program? I know its like that at Cornell’s arch program. if you even show a hint of consideration for another major in your application, they reject you.

hey, i applied to Syracuse University already and I think I got the grades to get in, but thats not my question.

I applied to the Whitman School of Management because I know I want to do something in business, but I also think I would want to do something in the field of Sports Management.

If i do get accepted to the business school, any chance I can transfer into the Human Ecology School to get enrolled in the Sport Management Program (if i chose to do so)?

or, would i be able to contact syracuse university admission office and see if i could do some kind of dual application thing where i apply to both colleges within the university? im so upset because i really have read good stuff about the management program but didnt wanna limit myself to just that and have to worry about transferring to the business school! help! thanks!

Thanks

akmeecheen,

you had to put down the College of Arts and Sciences as a second choice ad Architecture first.

i never knew it was that competitive! 2nd in the nation? wow it seems like Syracuse is going to become just as good as schools like Duke, UNC, northwestern, etc.

Management
Journalism/communication
Sports Management
Psychology
Architecture
VPA
The Sciences are without a doubt going to be next after the new Life Sciences Building.

akmeecheen, if you put down a 2nd or 3rd choice school then you have a CHANCE of getting into those schools. Special emphasis on CHANCE because it still isn’t even a guarantee you’re going to get into the University.

“I know its like that at Cornell’s arch program. if you even show a hint of consideration for another major in your application, they reject you.”

I’m pretty sure you’re not sure of this and have no clue what you’re saying. They know students have varied interest so why on Earth will they turn you down based on this only??? And to answer your question, it’s ok to mark down a major that is the polar opposite from what you truly want to do. Or you can even go undecided because once you get to the University you’re to have to declare anyway.

Adcoms said it at a presentation. I wasn’t there, but I personally know the person who was. It’s because of the nature of the program. You need to have a die-before-I-stop passion to survive in the program, and if you’re doing an alternative choice with another college in Cornell, they assume your dedication to the arch program won’t be enough to cut it. They have an acceptance rate of about 15%, if not lower. They can afford to be that selective.

For some reason I also recall hearing that arch is the only school at Syracuse where it is not a good idea to put down a second choice…
arch involves so much specialized preparation to apply (portfolio, love since childhood, etc) and cannot be transferred into from another SU school without starting over…

wouldn’t be surprised if OP is correct for both Cornell and SU’s arch program

Lmao well judging by Kingsta and House of London’s Response, theres not much to say. Personally, I think if u get admitted to Whittman (#6 in the the nation) u should stay there. You can ABSOLUTELY dual major in Sports Management. I dual in Political Science because I too didn’t want to limit myself. My advice however, would to not do what I did. They make you take a Sports Management class and you have to maintain a certain grade. You’ll still have to wait till at least second semester to dual so don’t get too wrapped up in it. Akmeecheen, Architecture is tough , but if Newhouse is your number 2 then yes you are right I think. However, you never know cuz it could go either way

Dude, Whitman isn’t 6th!

I had a question about the Syracuse’s recommendations. I know that they require 2 of them, but do they require it to be from teachers that teach 2 different subjects. Like i have to get one from math/science and English? Am i allowed to do them both with English teachers?

Sorry. 6th in graduate. 39th in undergrad. And jjcw, idt they have requirements. I did 1 english and 1 math and they took it no problem. I think as long as you have them it’s fine.
