Chances for Newhouse.

First off, I'd just like to point out that this site and these forums have been very helpful during the Admissions process. I've learned a lot of vital information about the process and different schools. Thank you to all those for the great insight.

Anyways, I am wondering if I will be able to get into Newhouse.

I am a Caucasian male from upstate New York.

Credentials:

-4.0 GPA (or a 98%, depending on your liking). I rank third out of a senior class with 123 students, and my school is relatively competitive. It is definitely worth noting within the region, but I wouldn't consider it as one of the best schools in the Northeast.

-I've taken every Honors course my school has to offer, and I've also taken numerous College Advanced Placement (CAP) courses through the local community college. I've received A's in all of the courses and have compiled near thirty credits in that department.

-I got a 27 on the ACTs and 1220 (1850 with all three) on the SATs. This is where I am lacking. My critical reading scores killed me on both (560 on SAT, not sure about ACT), and, not to ramble off excuses, but my slow test-taking habits certainly didn't help on the timed tests.

-I participate in two sports a year and have been a captain on three different teams since entering high school. I'm in a few "lesser" clubs (Math League and Debate Club), but I'm also in our school's National Honor Society and the National Honor Society through the local community college (Phi Theta Kappa). However, I do not hold any office positions.

-My volunteer work is present but not outstanding; it is more than the norm. As for summer work, I am employed at a local restaurant and work from May to October (about thirty-five hours a week when school is not in session).

-As for the application essays, I really am not sure. I'm applying for Newspaper Journalism and am told that I am a good writer by faculty (again, not to boast), but the only opinions that matter are those in the Admissions Office.

-Lastly, my Letters of Recommendation are like anybody else's. Nobody is going to write you a bad letter of recommendation, in my opinion.

I've been accepted to SUNY Oswego and Ithaca College, and Syracuse is really the only other school that I am considering. It is my number one choice, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Your EC's do not really reflect passion for comm.....but, you are male and your GPA/class rank is excellent......curious why you didn't apply ED, but nevertheless, they may give you a shot....what did you put down for 2nd choice school at SU? also, were you accepted to Park@Ithaca?? great program if Newhouse doesn't happen.....

Thanks for the feedback. As for your concerns:

a) We do not have a school newspaper, and my friends and I were very close to starting one, but our hectic schedules (school, sports, jobs, etc.) seemed to halt those ambitions. If I could bring back time, I probably would have made room.

b) I did not apply for Early Decision because I really was not sure where I wanted to go. In retrospect, it may have been a good decision.

c) I believe that I put Sport Management down as a second choice at Syracuse. If I do not get accepted to Newhouse, though, Ithaca is probably where I am headed. I was accepted to the Park School and got a Presidential scholarship. I applied for the Park Scholarship (a free ride given to fifteen incoming freshman at IC) and am slated to hear back this month on whether or not I'm a finalist, but I'm definitely not counting on anything there. It is a very prestigious award.

D1 was a Park Scholar finalist last year....ended up at Newhouse; she preferred that program and had been offered merit $$ (although Park would have been more $$, we didn't pursue; wasn't a fit for her).... i think your plan is a solid one, although I think you are one of those few that could enter SU in another school, get a high GPA, and then transfer to Newhouse.....gl

Thanks for the feedback, rodney. It is much appreciated.

Any other thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated as well.

BTW, rodney, what, in your opinion, distinguished Newhouse from the Park School? Just curious here...

Everything looks fine except your test scores. Newhouse has the highest score requirement at SU. Are you an URM? Otherwise, I think your scores are too low. Did you interview? Anything you can do to reinforce your passion to attend the Newhouse School might help.

shutdown: Park requires declaration of major prior to matriculation, D1 wanted a more broad-based liberal arts background along with communications and SU gave her a large scholarship without her having to compete for it like Park did.....she also felt that the kids at Newhouse were more of an academic nature rather than "artsy".....Div I sports didn't hurt......

it came down to Newhouse, Vandy and USC- Annenberg.....decided West Coast was too far for her....Vandy was weak in the major....

I don't think your SAT scores will hurt you. Your GPA rocks, but Newhouse likes seeing that your extracurriculars are oriented toward what you want to study. I think you'll get in though, considering your rank in class.
