Hey,
I have a question for Canadians at Mich. because other people do not seem to be able to answer this question. My question is how do canadian grades on the american grade system of 4.0 GPA... Here, 80 plus is A and i have two 80-85.. 3 85-90 and 1 90+... So basically all As and i am in IB so it is harder than normal Canadian schools. how do i look? .. what kind of grades did you Canadians have when entering U Michigan? Does A mean automatically 4.0 GPA?? Thanks for your help!!

I think technically you will have a 4.0 GPA since UM goes by your school system (I attended a Canadian school as well). But since many people seem to get 4.0s in Canadian high schools, I believe your ranking and performance compared to others applying from Canada will also be given slightly more weight. That is just what I think, since in some Canadian high schools, like half the kids receive As..

However, remember i am in IB and getting all As is by no means an easy thing to do. As for non IB Canadian Schools, getting all As is pretty rare too. 50 % of the kids may have As but no way All As

Lots of kids applying from Canada take all-IB curriculum or just take a whole lot of APs..but still compared to your regular US high school As are much easier to come by. This is just speaking from experience as someone who attended both a US high school and a Canadian high school. I guess what I am trying to say is, your class rank might play a slightly bigger role than a regular US applicant's rank might. Personally, I believe you will get in if you have good SAT scores (mid 2000s to 2100), and a top 10% class rank.

what happens if your school doesn't even have a gpa system? I go to a high school in canada as well and my guidance counselor said we don't even calculate gpas...we just go by percentages

I went to a Canadian high school. I never got a mark below 80. When I met with my academic adviser and she gave me my placement exam results, it showed on the paper that Umich calculated my GPA as 4.0. I think that is ridiculous, as getting 80 per cent is by no means that difficult. I was a big time slacker in high school. I think FUTBIL is right. Just work on getting a high SAT/ACT score. I got 1960 (V 620, M 650 W 690). Glowing recs, thoughtful essays and the proven ability to pay will also bolster your application.

With a lot of practice and work, you can get 700 on each section of the SAT. I didn't take my SAT class (offered at my school) that seriously and almost winged the exam.
