Any Canadians willing to help a fellow canuck out..

Hey,
I have a question for Canadians at Swarthmore because other people do not seem to be able to answer this question. My question is how do canadian grades on the american grade system of 4.0 GPA... Here, 80 plus is A and i have two 80-85.. 3 85-90 and 1 90+... So basically all As and i am in IB so it is harder than normal Canadian schools. how do i look? .. what kind of grades did you Canadians have when entering Swarthmore? Does A mean automatically 4.0 GPA?? Thanks for your help!!

You posted tis question on the forum for Amherst, Uchicago, Williams, Notre Dame, and a bunch of other schools too. For that, I won't answer your question. Other people have answered this question.

Agree with dchow08. You are abusing the forum.

umm... no .. the 9 colleges i posted this in.. are the 9 colleges i am applying too.. wow everyone except Swarthmore seems to be helpful.. thats weird. I asked these colleges because each college has a DIFFERENT system... what goes for Amherst does not go for Swarthmore.'abusing' this forum? lol uh huh

Amazing. You are really going to try to justify your self absorption in posting the same question on 9 threads?? You are abusing the whole college confidential forum, not just this thread.

first of all, please confirm that you do not actually attend Swarthmore because i have a favourable opinion of it and its students and please do not ruin that. Caleno are you frustrated with your life that you make a big deal about a clueless international student who is trying to get the best info possible from different schools. There are bigger problems than me posting 9 times out there so calm down. I believe, as long as my posts are not anything stupid or offending, i can post as many times as i like.

Okay, mashrur, you definitely sound annoyed by the fact that we stated the truth that posting pretty much exactly the same question in 9 different forums is pretty stupid. I think that Caleno and I are fine with clueless people trying to find out about college but we find it bad policy to ask the same question in 9 different forums.

mashrur, though I'm not Canadian, I'll be a student at Swarthmore this year, and yes on the 4.0 grading scale all A's should be close to a 4.0. Now different high schools around the United States have different scales (sometimes 5.0 or 6.0) which weigh harder/easier courses differently, but to simplify everything it's really your unweighted GPA (that is, your GPA on the 4.0 scale) that is important for college admissions. Also, though students accepted to Swarthmore generally have pretty good grades, Swarthmore is known to be an academically challenging environment, and admissions really likes to look at the rigor of your course load, so it's a good thing you're not only getting good grades but taking many IB courses.

Now this year Swarthmore had an acceptance rate of ~15%, and several international students were accepted, including two from Canada. With your good grades in challenging courses, it's up to you if you want to apply, though with the response from dchow08 and Caleno I hope you haven't been discouraged. Don't feel bad, clearly you wanted to know what grades Canadians have when entering SWARTHMORE, as opposed to college in general.

mashrur:

You're best bet would be to ask your high school guidance couselor about grade conversions to the US 4.0 system. If anyone has experience, that would be the place. They probably have a school profile that gets sent to US colleges providing context for the grades.

If that fails, you could e-mail the director of international admissions at Swarthmore and ask how your Canadian system would be viewed.

thanks guys! much more helpful response :)than before. i will contact someone at Swarthmore! only two were accepted :/ hmm, i am not sure about my chances then . we shall see! thanks!
