I believe that of the 200 students invited to participate in the honors program, the University gives half the slots to in-state and half to out-of-state.

My son has been awarded a Davie scholarship for fall 2006.

virsinc: Instate or OOS? Early or Regular?

OOS, early admission.

vrsinc, Was your son notified with his acceptance letter? Was there a special scholarship weekend? Was the weekend after getting the official acceptance letter?

I'll try to recreate this, hoping that I'm doing it accurately. He applied Nov. 1st. Then he got the "we love your application" letter, dated Dec. 14. Then he got the Dec. 21 letter saying that he had been chosen as a finalist for a merit-based scholarship, and inviting him to Scholar's Day on Feb. 3, which we debated, since he was going over for the Morehead Finalist's weekend in early March, and we didn't want to do anything to hurt his chances at the Morehead. (We decided to take the risk that Scholar's weekend would not hurt his chances at the Morehead, and that he should go.) Then he got the acceptance, dated Jan. 18. During Scholar's Day they said everyone there would get some kind of scholarship -- the question was which ones, and for how much. The invitation to the honors program is dated Jan. 30 -- I think it arrived while he was at Chapel Hill for Scholar's Day. About a week later he received the folder with the Davie Scholarship offer and information, dated Feb. 7. Hope this helps!

Thank you! That helps. Did they mention at the weekend how many people get each type of scholarship? Are there any partial scholarships for OOS, or is everything full tuition, room and board?

I wish I could answer these questions! I'll ask my son when I see him tomorrow. My impression is that they did not go into detail about scholarships, but I might be wrong. They had the round-table discussion in a small group with a professor (his group discussed a 16th century poem, and he did not come out thinking that he impressed anyone), and in the afternoon I think they were given a number of presentations about UNC. We were not anticipating the Davie -- it was a very happy surprise. The invitation letter had said that you didn't have to attend to be awarded a scholarship, but we decided that one's chances could only be helped by going. Now that he's been awarded the Morehead, presumably it will "free up" a Davie for someone else -- but I'll leave that to them. :-)

Wow, you must be so proud. I wish I could get significant merit money like that. Thanks for your help!

Are you sure that you won't? If I could, I would call the UNC people and say -- hey, can we just hand the Davie off to whenwillitbeover ? ;-)

haha, i wish. well, I got the "we love your application" letter, dated March 1, so I'm hoping for next step. But the pattern is...came so close to being an Emory Scholar, got an early acceptance from Vanderbilt (regular decision) but no invite to the Scholarship Weekend, got a likely from Duke but no scholarship (no surprise there, but still)....

I was wondering: did your "we love your application" letter say, in the last paragraph, "We also hope you will join us for at least one of the special events we will be hosting in April for students of exceptional promise. Details about these events will follow shortly." I'm afraid it's referring to one of those weekends where they give you red carpet treatment but don't involve merit money.

If you don't have access to the letter or don't remember--don't worry about this question, vrsinc. Thanks.

whenwillitbeover -- Is it possible that I failed to respond to your question above? I'm so sorry! I don't think that I received any notification that it was here. We're out of town for spring break right now, so I don't have access to the letter. In any case, you've probably made your decision by now. Do you have any news? I've thought a lot about you, and wondered where you'll be going in the fall.

Wow, that's very nice of you! Actually, I had completely forgotten about this question. I haven't even visited the UNC forum since then, probably. I ended up getting admitted to UNC, but without any scholarship money. So I'm probably not going there. I'm considering Brown PLME or Baylor Squared Medical Track (both BS/MD combined 8-year programs)...also Brandeis (full tuition there) and Vanderbilt (half tuition, but will be close to home when we move to Memphis area).

I wish you, your son, and the rest of your family the best! Is it hard seeing him off to college?

Yay! So it is, essentially, over! And very happily, from the sounds of your post! Those are great, great schools, and great packages! You know, everyone says that this is a crap shoot, even for the best resumes, but it's hard to believe until you go through it. My son was accepted to Virginia, Davidson and UNC, got the Morehead, but was waitlisted at Rice and Georgetown, even with a perfect ACT score, a 1540 SAT, a 3.8 GPA and 7 AP courses. So go figure! You really can't take any of it personally. It helps to have faith that the right thing is going to work out for you.

I will miss him greatly, but now I will focus on helping my daughter, a rising sophomore, go through the process. And in three years we will have an empty nest, so I'm fantasizing about time to travel, see movies, get extra sleep, get in great physical shape, and read all the books on my shelf. Whoopee!

Warmest wishes to you and for your future, which I can tell will be very, very bright. If your path ever brings you to Louisville, Kentucky, please do send me a message. We'd love to treat you to dinner.

Quick question-- do OOS Carolina scholars still get national merit money?

That is a great question -- but Carolina Scholars is a full ride, right? Would the $ just be extra cash, in that case? My son did report UNC as his first choice school to the NMF. I guess it might be worth asking them. There are probably others here who know more about it.

Well, Carolina covers room, board, tuition and fees.
NM is $1000/year, so that could go for books, etc. Also, I am receiving the $2500 from the national merit corp, so I'm not sure how that all fits in.

My best recommendation would be to call UNC Admissions and Financial Aid and/or NMF and ask them -- that is probably what we will do, just to make sure we don't miss something.

My daughter was told last year that an individual student may only receive one academic scholarship from the university itself, which does not preclude departmental scholarships, outside scholarships, etc. I would interpret that to mean that you would not receive NM money from the university but could receive it directly from NMF. The best thing to do is to call the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.
