My D would love to attend Vandy. She attends a very rigorous and prestigious high school .She is a B+ student with good Ec’s and very strong SAT and ACT scores Do B+ students get admitted to Vandy? Would the high board scores have any impact. She is deciding but does not want to squander and early decision if she is out of the ball park? Would a regional admissions officer have any opeinion on this?
What’s her unweighted GPA and rank (grades will be viewed in the context of her school). Did she take the most challenging curriculum? How “very strong” are her SAT/ACT scores? Where in Vandy’s 25th-75th range are they? By good ECs, do you mean leadership?
A B+ usually means a 3.3 GPA.
use specifics: GPA, test scores, course rigor, % students who typically go to a 4-year college…
I mean if its a 3.3 GPA from Mira Loma or a similar super competitive school she should be fine; context please.
Yes, your regional adcom could help. Most prestigious high schools have GC’s with good data on how their students with similar profiles do in the college admissions game.
With top 1% test scores the adcom will ask “why are you not giving a speech on graduation day?” If you have a good answer you are still in the game.
please know you can type in the words “Common Data Set” at many edu sites and get the exact numbers on who was admitted vs who Yielded and put down the deposit-numbers applying ED etc. Also you can scan last year’s boards at admission decision weeks for ED and RD. Congrats on raising a fabulous daughter who is a strong student. This is a time to help her reach but also help her make calculated decisions regarding where to submit her applications.
Yes, my niece graduated from Vandy with what you are describing. She did pay full tuition though.
The cynic in me believes even need blind schools know which high schools graduate well funded students.
Her GPA unweighted is about a 3.4. Taking 4 AP classes this year and ACT is 34…Interested in Arts and Science (not engineering).
I’d recommend looking at Naviance for your school if they have it. It will give you a sense of how that GPA will be viewed coming from your HS. Asking your GC to have a conversation with the adcom could help. Lastly, it will depend on the trend of the grades. If the GPA was brought down by a bad freshman year, it might be more easily minimized.
