any chance of me wearing big red doing engineering?

want to know my chance for cornell (engineering EARLY DECISION) (legacy)

I go to one of the most prestigious prep school in the nation .. school mean SAT: 1350 we have serious grade deflation.... and we are up there with the philips, deerfield, st paul ad those top schools, one of the top 7s

biggest problem (explained by GC): I didnt go to a international school when I was in hong kong, therefore my english and spanish grade sucked first year....and she also highlighted my upswing trend....

my sophomore year: top of 3rd quintile ....junior year: top of 2nd quintile

SAT I

Recommendations:
1 amazing rec from my math teacher who taught me multivar and linear algebra junior year..she probably talks about my passion in math and how I self studied for AP Calc and jumped a year...she also knows me well in person.she's also my advisor for mathclub and math team

1 decent rec from my spanish teacher who saw my spanish grade go from a C+ to A- from sophomore to junior year...and then go on to study abroad in summer

GC rec is decent

1 stellar rec from the secretary general of a UN chartered NGO as I was a webmaster, he talks about how i approached big corporations, wrote proposals and landed 2 lucritive webbanner sponsorship for the website...(maybe a hook?)

took multivar and linear junior year...plus almost qualified for USAMO, dont know whether this help for engineering ..and hopefully legacy helps with ED

anyway cumilative GPA is 3.2 breakdown is sophomore 3.1, junior 3.3 senior so far 3.7 unweighted

?????????????????????

Good numbers + great awards + great courseload = good chances.

If people in engineering all have really high AMC/AIME scores and have taken multivar and linear in high school, I'm going to a) have a really slim chance or b) feel really stupid if I get in : P

Hey,

I would say that you have a pretty good shot. The GPA is probably the weakest link in your app, but they will take into account that you come from a school like Exeter, Groton, Choate, etc.

It helps very much that you took and excelled in the highest math classes offered, and did pretty well in the others. The upward trend is very good!

The factor that will likely compensate for the GPA are those recs. It sounds like you chose wisely. If your math teacher's rec is as good as you think and the spanish teacher's rec reminds the AdCom of your growth and determination to improve in spanish (tie in to trip abroad), then they will help you a lot!

Make sure your essays don't reflect any deficiency in English (get a native speaker to proofread) and explain how the major is a good fit for you. The engineering majors are each very different (most don't realize this), with different qualities sought in applicants, so use your essays to do some convincing in this regard.

Good luck!

thanks...more pls...

you have a legacy.... = YOU'RE DEFINITELY GETTING IN =)

legacy is by no means a hook i think...even in ED...i heard they simply consider it a tipping factor...afterall..more than 50% of the legacies are rejected each year...and my stats are subpar (look at my GPA)

yea...yur right about the legacy thing bearcats

ooh!! seriously?! well that's definitely good news. they should just get rid of legacies

i m kinda optimistic about his chance to cornell ED engineering simply becoz of his math background
guys..
this kid did multivariable calculus and linear algebra junior year
this kid scored 9 on AIME (only around 500 people managed to do that)
this kid is head of math club, math team and prez of Mu Alpha Theta at a top boarding school(bearcats is the mascot of HOTCHKISS)
this kid is not a native speaker who wasnt at an international school (that C and B- in english which pulled down his GPA can be explained, and english grade is consistantly going up)
this kid has good ECs (almost outstanding, leadership and volunteering)
this kid is a legacy applicant (cornell cares more about legacy than most other ivies, not penn though)
this kid is applying ED
this kid has 800 on both his Math IIC and Science SAT2s

so i dont think it's a guarantee in but he has a very good chance IMO

and sillyrabbit... i think this kid deserves admissions to engineering school even without legacy

they shouldnt do away legacy...people just have to get over the fact that colleges need money to run....and legacy = good money in most cases....

not to spike any arguments...there are other threads for u to do so...

pls more opinions on chances

oh god.. nice AIME score. I know you need some serious math talents to get a 9.. I got a 7 last year ><. And "only 500 people get 9"? I think less than 100people from our grade gets 9 in AIME. I think you have a 95% shot, if you get defered I would almost for sure be rejected.

Just Bumping This Up Before I Go To Bed

happi thxgivin///giv me chances

dubya vs borat
