Recommendations:
1 amazing rec from my math teacher who taught me multivar and linear algebra junior year..she probably talks about my passion in math and how I self studied for AP Calc and jumped a year...she also knows me well in person

1 decent rec from my spanish teacher who saw my spanish grade go from a C+ to A- from sophomore to junior year...and then go on to study abroad in summer

GC rec is decent

1 stellar rec from the secretary general of a UN chartered NGO as I was a webmaster, he talks about how i approached big corporations, wrote proposals and landed 2 lucritive webbanner sponsorship for the website...(maybe a hook?)

took multivar and linear junior year...plus almost qualified for USAMO, dont know whether this help for engineering

anyway cumilative GPA is 3.2 breakdown is sophomore 3.1, junior 3.3 senior so far 3.7 unweighted

what are my chances for

cornell (engineering EARLY DECISION) (legacy)
Wash U St Louis (engineering)
Michigan Ann Arbor (engineering)
Tufts (engineering)
Carnegie Mellon (info system/engineering/business)
USC (engineering)
BU (engineering)
U of Illinois urbana champaign (engineering)

cornell (engineering EARLY DECISION) (legacy) - decent chance
Wash U St Louis (engineering) - in (if showed interest)
Michigan Ann Arbor (engineering) -in
Tufts (engineering)-in (if showed interest) - Who goes to Tufts for Engineering ?
Carnegie Mellon (info system/engineering/business) - in
USC (engineering)-in
BU (engineering)-in
U of Illinois urbana champaign (engineering) -in

Getting a 9 on the AIME is very hard, so it is clear that, you are very intelligent. So, Cornell will figure that out and I think they should accept you.

yo shaqdaddy...are you from new york...i know somebody with that exact same IM

but being in the 3rd quintile sophomore year, would that rule me out? i mean my cumilative is only a 3.2

bumpppppppppppppppp

Oh, a 3.2 is rather low. Even with typical grade depression. If were an admissions officer, I'd think you are brilliant but slacked off early. I'd say no for Cornell.

what if my college counsellor explains how english is my second language...and how my english grade starts from C first year which killed my grade to B- to B and my spanish goes from C+ to A- to an A this year....i mean i really had a hard time changing from my lousy local school in hong kong to this top boarding school....

come on people i m freakig out pls give me more inputs

Bearcats, maybe the changing schools etc. is a topic you want to address in your essay. Still, half your grades are not As, so don't know how much explaining you can do. Regardless, you have great Math and Science SAT scores, which is most important for engineering schools. With the GPA, Cornell and Wash U are slight reaches to reaches (SAT should help), the rest of your schols look good.

does legacy helpmuch at cornell for ED

and pls pls pls more inputs on all the schools pls

bumppppppppppp

bumppppagain comeon people

bearcats, what else do you want. Yes legacy at Cornell helps, but with that GPA, you'll need more than help for ivies and the equivalent. The other engineering schools look fine.

as i get different responses,i wanna get more input from different people...

I was talking to a Yale admissions counselor (from my district), and he told me, when asked, that GPA is not a deal breaker if its reasonable. I asked him to elaborate, and he said that, for example, somebody from a top 10 prep school with an 89 (for example) would be looked upon in good light by Yale. Since you have an upward trend, I think the essays could save you from the GPA. I read one essay about coming into and assimilating in America, a brief anecdote, which got a friend into HYP, so I think that such an essay would benefit to you. Hope this helps. Let us know when the decision comes.
