I want to study Engineering in College.

Are you from New York or Massachusetts? I’d say you have a 50/50 chance if you are from New York and maybe slightly higher chances if you’re from Massachusetts. Your SAT scores are average for UMass Amherst but a little low for the college of engineering (but your math SAT is high).

Your EC’s aren’t that weak. You play a varsity sport and have done community service. This is more than a lot of students (trust me, I know). Remember that this is not MIT and they are not really looking for inventions or winning prestgious science or art competitions.

Do some extensive practice on the SATs (I recommend the Official SAT Practice Book, it’s 18 dollars and it improved my score by 200 points) and get an 1800+ and you will have a very strong chance at UMass Amherst. Now you have score choice so you don’t even have to report your old score if you do a lot better. Your class rank and GPA is a little weak but you have taken honors courses and have challenged yourself (and that counts). Also, UMass does admit some students who are in the bottom half of thier classes.

If you are from Massachusetts, consider applying to UMass Lowell as well or applying to an alternate major that is easier to be admitted into (a science major or undecided for example). If you get above a 2.8 GPA or so there you can easily transfer to UMass Amherst after one year. UMass Amherst has become more competitive lately and you should work hard your first term senior year to show them that you are a strong academic fit. Also, remember that UMass uses comprehensive evaluation, meaning hat they look at your essays as well. If you be yourself and do well in the next few months you will almost surely get in.
