Any chances of getting in???? Umiami, penn state, purdue, west virginia

I am a junior in high school and my gpa as of now is about a 3.4-3.5. I go to a very competitive high school in New york. I would like to know what sat scores I would need to possibly get into these schools. I specifically would like to major in engineering. I am taking honors physics right now and plan to take AP physics next year. At the U of Miami i know someone that works there... if i got a letter of recommendation from him would it increase my chances of admission or if i had that person speak with the office of admission. I really would like to get into one of these so please tell me what you would recommend to do.

UMiami is a long shot and Purdue is probably a no. Penn State and West Virginia will probably be a yes. The recomendation from the person who works at UMiami may help but unless you have about 2100+ SATs I don’t think it will be enough to get you in.

What’s your class rank? How’s a 3.5 GPA seen in the context of your school?

also im hispanic and i will be the first generation of my family to attend college. A 3.5 in my school is towards the bottom of the top 50%. The top ten students have a gpa around 4.3 or 4.2

Being hispanic and first generation (URM) will surely give you a boost in your applications. Work hard during your senior year to increase your GPA and do well on the SAT. You might end up reaching all of those schools. If you have any particular interest (in some subject), I would also recommend taking SAT Subject Tests.

I don’t think being hispanic will do much anything for you at UMiami as they are 20% Hispanic already.

i plan on taking ap physics ap gov senior year and i am also taking a pre engineering course that i started at the beginning of junior and year. its a 2 year course. At the end we get an exam and with a certain grade we get college credits. Do you think taking this course will give me a boost also. What SAT scores should i aim for?

Taking a course like that will be a boost for you for sure if you do well in it. Shoot for 2100+ on your SATs as it will open quite a few doors for you. I would also try and find a few more schools you like that you would like to apply to.

which other engineering schools do you think i could have a chance at with my gpa and a possible sat score of 2100+

Quite a few actually. Depends on you.
Big/Small school?
Big/Small town?
What can you afford?
Where are you willing to go in the US?

Take a look at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

the size of school doesnt matter. and the cost could be anywhere from 20k to 30k. Location doesnt matter either.

Ok so perhaps consider Rochester Institue of Technology, Drexel, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, University of Utah, Case Western Reserve(Reach). There are TONS more perhaps use this as a short list to get you started on your research. Most of these will give you decent financial aid to the point where they should be between 20 and 30K a year. Penn State was a good choice. University of Utah and also Utah State University are generally my favorite public schools for out of state engineering. The both provide solid ABET accredited programs for a price that is hard to find elsewhere out of state. If you find you like one of these schools try to look up more like it.

in order to get that type of score would you recommend taking 5 sections of the sat everyday. i am already taking a princeton review course, a lot of people say the diagnostic test is a lot harder than the actual sat.

It may be best to post that question in the SAT/ACT forum.

oh ok. i did some research and i like North Carolina State do you think its attainable or more of a stretch?
