Greetings. My apologies for this being so long. Unfortunately, my high school GPA is very low due to medical issues freshman and sophomore year, but junior year also kicked my butt. I will only have about a 2.4 GPA and i received a 22 on the ACT. I’m freaking out so bad that I’ve been getting sick. I will have a few extracurriculars under my belt and I’m even doing a CNA program so I will be eligible to work at Methodist Hospital. I reside in Nebraska and would like to go out of state, but I’m finally learning that that is almost impossible. Is there any university for me at all? Would prefer to not do CC if possible.
There are Many relatively open access schools. At UN Kearney your ACT is right in the middle 50%ile. If your Guidance Counselor addresses your medical issues that might tip in your direction. Wayne State and Chadron are Open Admission colleges.
Will you need a significant amount of financial aid? Will you have satisfactorily completed the typical college preparatory curriculum for English, Math, Science, etc.? Are you interested in a health-related career? I’m sure there are many four-year colleges that would accept you, if you can pay to attend. One possibility is Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. I think that the Universities of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho have very high acceptance rates. They are less expensive for out-of-state students than some other public colleges. If you want smaller colleges, there are some with high acceptance rates, also. I think that Whittier, in CA, Flagler, in FL, and a number of small southern and midwestern colleges accept the vast majority of applicants. Some of those colleges are not as expensive as more prestigious liberal arts colleges on the East Coast.
Hello. I will not need a whole lot of financial aid due to a college fun. Yes, I would love to be a nurse. If really like to go to Methodist here in NE if possible. I will have at least 90% of required core classes completed though, I may be missing one. Unfortunately, our concern was more towards my health and simply graduating on time.

Sorry for the grammar, my phone is buggy.
My concern is, if I do not have the minimum GPA requirements then am I screwed?
I will have every normal core course except Geometry. In exchange for not being able to take it, I did a Business Math course at a CC. Will this be a negative?
You will need to check with individual colleges. Most will prefer the traditional Math curriculum. I’m a little confused by your posts. I inferred from the first that you wanted to leave NE, but a subsequent post suggested that you wanted to remain near home for health reasons.
Yes, I’m sorry. I’m at the point where it doesn’t matter too much, but yes, out of state would be preferable. Though, my parents and I have been talking about Methodist here, but I’m unaware if I’ll have a chance. Do you think taking a CNA program there will amplify me a bit? My only overall question is, should I be worried if my GPA is a bit under the minimum requirement? Am I completely screwed?
But yes, I would love to be in a health/science related career. I don’t know why I’m freaking out, at least one school should accept me. After my junior year though, my brain has been wired to believe I’m only a number, and quite frankly, mine aren’t good.
And earlier, I meant that we were so focused on my health that we weren’t overly concerned with what all I was taking. Examples being the math courses. Math is a struggle for me, but English and Science are my strong points. My parents and I just wanted me to be able to graduate with my class, because unfortunately our brains were pretty frantic at the time. There was a lot of confusion and instability, we were lost. Sorry about all of the confusion.
You would have to call the college to ask about the GPA but my definition of minimum means you don’t have that, you don’t get in.
That’s what I would assume as well. Thank you. I was planning on calling Methodist tomorrow. Would they honestly tell me if I would be denied or not? Or would they be like, “Well we look at everything…” cause that’s not what I need to hear.
Why don’t you ask the college when you speak with them instead of expecting strangers on the Internet to know the answer?
Are your medical issues completely behind you or under control? That might influence your decision to go out of state or too far from home. Why are you so against going to a Community College first? CCs are pretty good of bringing high schools graduates with less than stellar grades, up to speed for 4-year colleges, with the side benefits of offering college credits at an affordable price. Going to an out of state 4-year institution that, for all intents and purposes, is just as good or even worst than your local CC, might not be the best use of your college fund.
Getting into a BSN Nursing program in most states (don’t know about Nebraska, might be a lot easier) can be a very challenging, given the sheer number of applicants and their high stats. There are however, various paths you can take to achieve that goal. Many students have started out by doing a LPN program, followed by a LPN -to-RN Bridge (Associates Degree) and finally a RN-to-BSN bridge program (some online).
I’m curious: by what means will you complete 90% of the core courses for a nursing degree by the end of your senior year of high school? Are you a dual enrolled high school student? If so, what is your College GPA?
So, in a nutshell, you are NOT screwed, but you might have to be flexible and take a more indirect path to reaching your ultimate career goals. There are many other health-related career options that you might want to look at, that does not require a bachelor’s degree.
My medical issues will effect me for the rest of my life, but most of it was removed during my surgery. I would really like to get my BSN if possible, I am a strong Science student. Yeah, my parents and I have pretty much agreed to look at schools here and close by. By the 90% thing I meant that I will not have Geometry, I instead took a Business Math class at Metro Tech.
Yes, I am calling colleges tomorrow for information, it’s the only way to know.
I am purely a High School student.
But thank you all for the help, I am a bit more persuaded to go to the source now.
