Any colleges for me?

Greetings. First of all, my apologies for the length. I’m going to be a senior in high school and am terrified of the application process for college. I will have a very low GPA, about a 2.4. I also only got a 22 on the ACT. I know this sounds absolutely terrible, which it is, but my freshman year I was diagnosed with endometriosis. I was having “lady” cramps on a daily basis from the ages of 12-14. I ended up having surgery over Christmas break freshman year and my high school told my mom they couldn’t help me anymore. I eventually ended up taking classes online and returned to school sophomore year. I will also have some extracurriculars: two years of bowling team, three years of women’s chorus, and one year of the book club. I am also employed, though I’m not sure how much that matters, and I also will be taking a CNA program to improve my knowledge on nursing and will even be able to be an actual CNA at our hospital nearby. Yes, I also have a few F’s on my record, but they have been made up. My concern is that my only choice is community college, and I’m having a hard time accepting that, but is it true? I’m really considering the University of Missouri at KC and University of Illinois at Chicago. Thank you!

Please use the College Search or the College Admissions forum for help, this one is for guessing if you would get in certain places, it isn’t the best place for input and suggestions only a play area. Many people won’t look here.

If you take out freshman grades, what are your grades for sophomore and Jr year? You might get the freshman grades essentially disregarded due to medical condition. But why gpa so low if grades are replaced?

What is your state residency? I think you need to look at other colleges in your state that have lower admission standards or do CC. Does your high school course work meet requirements for admission to those colleges? Are you taking the CNA concurrent with HS? Are you trying for a nursing program?

UIC your score puts you about the bottom 25% of the class, but gpa way too low.
UM-KC your score is a little better as the bottom 25% is 20 and lower, gpa way too low.

My apologies, I wasn’t very familiar with this site. I’m so stressed that I was getting sick and I just needed to say something. I missed a semester of freshman year and sophomore year, sorry, my brain did freeze when I was writing it. My first school removed me halfway through freshman year, then I switched schools at the second semester of sophomore year due to medications and pain. I was also in therapy and even had to get my stomach scoped out. I have looked at state schools because I will be graduating with the normal core requirement.

I am in Nebraska and have been looking in state as well. Do I have any chance anywhere? My grades have always suffered. Junior year, I’ll admit, I was like a lot of juniors. Just stressed and I overall suffered. All I can say is I’ve never had above a 3.0. Am I really screwed?

The CNA program will be this summer through Methodist college so I can basically start a nursing career. Will that even amplify me a bit for applications?

The only thing which might help you is if there is a upward swing in your grades. For UIC, your chances are very low. Also, you are not an Illinois resident. If you are interested in nursing at UIC, the program doesn’t accept students until Junior year. Nursing is one of the programs at UIC where they actively try to keep OOS students below about 10%.

Community college is a realistic option for you if you can maintain a 3.0 GPA there. If you can’t maintain that type of GPA, you will find transferring hard.

I think that you have hope in entering UMKC and UIC. Colleges don’t look only at grades, though they are important, they look at the whole person. If you can write your essay and show them all that you have gone through, I think you have a chance at both. I have a friend who only had an 18 and got into UIC. Make sure to just tell your story. If you need any guidance,I would be happy to help.
