Hi, I'm relatively new to this wonderful forum and to the MT college admissions process. I'm wondering if anyone can help with my questions re: NYC unified auditions. When are they scheduled? Do we need to contact the schools directly in order to schedule at the unifieds or is there a general contact site for these?
Lastly, what are yours and your child's recommendations about whether to schedule on-site auditions, or to go to the unifieds? or a little of both?

Although, my d is finishing her freshman yr in HS, she has her short list of MT BFA's in her mind already due to all the conversations she's shared with so many fellow actors over the course of her MT experiences (since age 7). We are planning to visit campuses of her top choice schools, so would it be wise to go back a 2nd time to on-site auditions or do you feel that attending unifieds is the way to go? It's all very overwhelming to imagine so much travel, so far X 2. Thank you parent/child veterans of this process in advance. I've learned so much from you all, already.

There is a wealth of detailed information (including a direct link to the Unified website) on all the old CC Unified threads. If you take time to go back and read carefully, you'll find everything you need to know. Good luck on your MT journey! You are certainly getting a very early start. By the time your D is ready there might be some changes--so keep reading and checking in.

Everyone has their own take on what is best for them. Because we live out west, visiting all the schools before auditions (or even for auditions) was out of the question. We therefore chose to visit only the schools my D was accepted to...it turned out we had already seen two of the schools over years of traveling. the third school she discarded right away without seeing (it fell right below her top choice, which was the other school where she was accepted), so that is the school we are visiting! (she was also admitted to two safety schools which were non-audition and which we did not visit). You are back east--it would be much easier for you to visit all the schools and even do on campus auditions, which i understand are a much fuller day what with tours and dance auditions and so forth. that said, unifieds are the way to get a lot done in a very short amount of time. my D had only one on campus audition: she was admitted to that school and three others which were all from the unifieds--they were: emerson, syracuse and roosevelt. University of arizona was an on-campus audition. i do know from reading the boards that even if you do a unified audition for penn state, you are still required to go to the campus for call-backs--so it might be worth it to audition there in the first place. as far as schedules go, the unifieds are around the same dates every year, and those dates will be announced in plenty of time for you to make arrangements. all your d's college applications will have a section where you will tic off first, second, third choice for times and dates of auditions and that will usually include unified dates as well. be aware that some schools do not go to unifieds and some appear not to but actually do. (google UNIFIED AUDITIONS and you will get a lot of the information you need). some schools (very few) have rolling admissions and your d may want the earliest audition date possible at those schools which is usually not a unified date. it is always best to call each school, (i called about twice a week for weeks until all my d's paperwork appeared and her dates were set in stone because we had flight arrangements to make). best advice whether on-site or for unifieds: check, double check, and triple check with the colleges. have as much documenting paper work IN HAND and trust no one to have your d's best interests at heart but yourself: that is not a cut against any college--we had no problems whatsoever--but colleges and the post office are amazingly busy during application time, and things can slip through the cracks (we had to send SAT scores several times to the same schools, personally re-send transcripts after the high school had sent them, as well as letters of recomm. that got "lost"). Make reservations early as possible because things fill up (hotels, airplane, car rentals), and unless your d already has about 10 schools on her list (including at least one non-audition program), have her spend the next few years researching a few more programs to add to her audition list. i am very impressed you are already thinking this thing through! break a leg!

I agree with Freelance if you do a search about Unifieds on this forum, you will find a wealth of information.....about the process, the logistics, the pros/cons, etc. Just so you know, you do have to arrange audition appointments with the schools themselves, not with any Unifieds "organization".

Also, to clarify one thing in Sareccasmom's helpful post.....the callbacks ON campus for PSU only seem to be for the Chicago or LA Unifieds, NOT the NYC ones. The NYC ones were "complete" in NYC and students have been accepted at NYC Unifieds for PSU and have no second audition dates to have to attend.

As Freelance said, you are starting VERY early to think about this but I guess the more knowledge you glean now, the more ready you will be when the time comes. For many, starting in fall of junior year is typical to really begin this process. Meanhile you have 1 1/2 years to read all the past threads and archives on CC.....it could take that long, LOL....but truthfully, would be a great "education" for this time for you, when you don't have to seriously be too involved in the process yet. Happy reading...

I'm not sure if this is considered "bumping up a thread"... but I would much rather not start a whole new one because theres already several threads about unifieds.

I am auditioning for several schools within a 2 day period at NYC's unifieds, and I was hoping people who have attended unifieds in NY could give me the low down on each school and how they conduct things at NYC's regional auditions. I'm mostly concerned about times over lapping, which they most likely will somehow, and I will proabably have to move things around once I have all of my times sent to me in the mail.

I included the list below. I'm looking for feedback from anyone that has auditioned for any one of these schools at NY unifieds.. just to give me a general idea of time slots, and how each one is run. Thanks!

NYC Unifieds February 3-4

Cinncinatti Conservatory of music
Ithaca College
University of the Arts
Point Park University
Penn State
Roosevelt University- CCPA

I'm pretty sure just about each school except Ithaca will be conducting dance auditions along w/ the vocal portions (although I hear that UArts requires you to do a solo piece at regionals.)

Now, I'm fully aware that this is ALOT for 2 days. But I'm pretty much on my own in this process financially and have to save as much money as I can while still fitting in all of the auditions that I really want to attend.

I'd like to know how long each audition took as a whole (including both dance and acting/singing) and what time slots are available, just in case I need to call and request a change. Thank you everyone! CC rocks :)

This is Point Park's first time at the Unified auditions and they have also changed their audition criteria from last year. This may affect how other auditions that day are scheduled for you. You have to sing a 16 bar song and do a one minute monologue...then they will post a list (I guess after waiting for eveyone else to finish) to see who made the cut to dance and attend a "musical theater class". My d is not doing Point Park at the Unifieds, but it sounds as though it could be a rather lengthy process.

Good luck to you! My d will also be at the NY Unifieds to do a few auditions there but she is only doing one audition each day Friday-Sunday.

MTgeek - Any chance you could add the Friday onto your trip? I believe CCM auditioned some people on Friday. That could ease up your schedule a bit.

lynnm- I could do CCM on Friday.. however, I am auditioning for CMU that day at 1.. and I heard that is quite a lengthy process which takes at least 4 hours. I'll be arriving in nyc that morning around 11:45. I could make arrangements to come the Thursday night before, and do CCM in the morning... but I do not know if that will run into my scheduled CMU time. I hear the CMU auditions one of the more intense ones, which makes me apprehensive to do more than one audition that morning

I am a little confused about NYC Unifieds. BOCO is holding auditions on 2/2 and my daughter is scheduled that day. Is this when Unifieds begin or is it 2/3? The person I talked to at BOCO was unclear. My daughter and I are in the process of scheduling everything there and are trying to get in 6, but only if Unifieds are truly over 3 days, not 2. If that is the case, she will do BOCO on the 2nd, and schedule 2 for 2/3 and 2 for 2/4. The BOCO person did say that 2 was the MOST you should schedule per day, although I know that people do more quite often. Thanks for any clarification anyone can offer!

Last year Ithaca did not hold their audition in the same location as most of the other schools. Also, once you scheduled your time they said you could not reschedule if a conflict arose. For these reasons, my d ended up not auditioning with them. Penn State assigned her to a time slot with a group of kids. First they did their dance audition together and then they went in individually to do their monologues and songs. The whole process took about and hour and a half. The people we dealt with were very helpful when she had to reschedule because of a conflict.

Yes, some schools definitely hold 3 days of auditions in NYC and some (like Otterbein I believe) are only there one or two days. Definitely check with each school on her list you should definitely be able to get in 6 auditions. My d is soooo excited to see your daughter there...she has missed her since this summer! Good luck scheduling!

Some schools do come in early, I believe, but I don't know if they're holding auditions at the American Management Association. Some of us only hold one day of auditions. Otterbein will be there on Sunday only.

MT Geek, when my daughter auditioned at the NY Unifieds, she did BOCO on Friday, but they were not actually part of the Unifieds. On Saturday, she did CCM which had a dance audition first, and that lasted about 30-40 minutes. It was a group dance audition. Then she waited about 45 minutes for her scheduled individual time, and that lasted about 15 minutes. That took up most of Saturday morning. She then had her audition for Roosevelt scheduled at about 1PM, so she had time to refresh herself, and their audition lasted about 20 minutes, but there was no dance audition as part of it.

On Sunday morning, she had her UArts audition, and that lasted about 20-25 minutes. She did have to prepare a solo dance routine that she performed during this time.

We were able to schedule some walk-ins, as they had availability, such as Penn State and SMU. Some of the schools, like Roosevelt took someone on the spot to audition because the person had not shown up.

Overall, we found the atmosphere to be very friendly, and stimulating. Of course, people were nervous, but there was a relaxed feeling even amongst all of the kids.

The schools we dealt with were all very accomodating about times. I had to change CCM and UArts, and both were wonderful about it. We called as soon as we found out there were conflicts.

I can't speak to all of the schools but each one of these were very nice to deal with, and the auditions went fine. Hope this helps.

Thanks divasmom! That is a very big help. You're awesome :)

As it seems at this point, only 2 of my auditions will have real dance auditions that will take a decent amount of time. CCM and Penn State, to my knowledge, are the only 2 schools with group dance auditions.

Roosevelt, Ithaca and Point Park won't be having dance auditions. And as you said, UArts requires a solo piece. So it really looks as if I won't have too hard of a time fitting in all of my auditions.

You may have a dance audition at Point Park if you get on the call back list. Not really sure how that is going to work or if you have to block off the day until everyone's auditions are over or not. You may want to check with them :-)

But I thought the call backs were taking place on campus at Point Park in Pittsburgh.. I thought auditionees just sang 16 bars and did a monologue, and if they were on the call back list, that meant they had to perform in a musical theatre class on campus.. Please correct me if I'm wrong :)

Gosh, I didn't hear that. My d is not doing Point Park at the Unifieds so I didn't realize the criteria was different and they would make everyone go back to Pittsburgh. Kind of defeats the purpose of going to the unifieds doesn't it? I still would recommend checking with them. Good Luck!

Yea that's what I've been hearing. Penn State does the same kind of thing... except I think its only at LA and Chicago unifieds. NY regional auditions dont require kids to go back to campus.

It does defeat the purpose to a certain extent.. except if they decide not to call you back, then it really doesn't.

i just got my Penn State unified audition confirmation letter, and it says that auditionees MAY be asked to interview with the MT faculty.... has anyone had any experiences with that?
