My D is trying to schedule her unified auditions. It looks like many schools ask you to keep a half day free. Also, they ask for a preferred day and then assign a time. She now has two at the same time. How does anyone schedule more than two auditions in one day? Will most schools have walk in spots available? This is all so complicated for a first timer! Thanks for any scheduling insight.

I don’t know what schools you have scheduled, but I was able to call two schools and rearrange without any difficulty. From what I can tell this happens a lot and the schools seem very willing to accommodate making changes.

^ agree with bisouu. The schools know this happens and are very accommodating, as long as there are spots available. I would suggest contacting them as soon as you can and if you know which days/ times you have available, let them know and ask if they can move your child into one of those. I know the schools are closed, but many times the administrator for the theatre program is monitoring emails and will reply. Agree it can be stressful, but my DC and I were just talking about how much fun it was last year when they were on this journey. I sure do miss those road trips together for all of the interviews. We also scheduled some on campus portfolio reviews (mine is a designer) just before or after the Unified weekend- many schools fairly nearby do that. It may be hard but keep having fun with this.

Thank you both. Part of the anxiety is not being able to reach schools right now and knowing that spots are filling up. The actual auditions won’t bother her as much as they will me.

All of the audition spots for C-M in Chicago have filled up and I don’t think we can afford to fly to PA later. Is there a chance of getting a walk in spot at a school like C-M?

Sorry to jump in - My daughter did unifieds last year and we had the same issue with NYU that you are experiencing with CMU. She went to the auditions for NYU bright and early, introduced herself and they said to stick around as there is usually some extra time and they would fit her in. They did and everything went very well. Having experience with CMU I believe they will be the same. It is always worth asking!

Thank you all for your help with this. Since I now have experience with Chicago Unifieds I wanted to leave a note for anyone who is coming along in 2015. My D was able to work out the times so that none of her auditions overlapped, but it did take many e-mails and phone calls. When she e-mailed a school, they would often e-mail back another day and time that had nothing to do with the day and time that she requested, so I think that phone calls worked better. Once we got there, we saw that a lot of schools were flexible about letting students shift their times to make other auditions.

She was able to fit in:

DePaul on campus on Saturday- half day unless you get a call back, then it is a full day. Parents take plenty to read/do. Starbucks and a sandwich shop nearby.

Emerson on Sunday- quick, especially if you volunteer to go first. Parents are not invited to the Q&A session, so take a book.

Fordham on Monday morning-very quick

Walk in at CMU, but only because she had already applied. They would have preferred that she had already scheduled a later audition date (and paid for it) online, but they worked her in when we promised to do that immediately afterwards. They were extremely accommodating. They said that they had added an extra day because of demand, but I didn’t see that on the website anywhere.

Syracuse Monday afternoon- a couple of hours. There is a movement session before they do their monologue, and then they are free to go. Parent session lasts as long as there are questions.

Walk in at Texas State after that. Lots of open spots and they were very nice. We went back for the info session at 5.

Tuesday morning BU- an hour long info session and then students audition in random order, though I think they asked if anyone needed to go quickly. About 2.5 hours total. BTW, the Hyatt is confusing to navigate. Auditions are in the building on the east side of the street. The escalator down to the first floor took us to Rugters, Suny Purchase and many others. Sandwich shops can also be found on this floor. Down one floor by escalator was BU and then the small elevator around the corner took us to the other half of Rutgers and Julliard. I’m told they stay in about the same place each year.

Tuesday afternoon-Julliard 2:30. Stayed until 5 in the afternoon, when callbacks were posted. I think those students stayed, which would make for a very long day. Few parents there since many of those auditioning are older.

Wed morning (10:00)- Suny Purchase. It was quick, but they were running about 15 minutes behind. Another student let my daughter go first so that she wouldn’t miss her next audition

Rutgers (10:40)-quick again, but they put us in seats and then forgot about us. We were supposed to be downstairs but didn’t know it.

Wed afternoon: We went back to the Palmer House to look for walk-ins, but schools were packing up and leaving.

Pace (1:30), started late. They were taking walk-ins and it took until about 4. Callbacks were posted at 4:15 and those kids stayed for another 45 minutes or so, I think.

I heard a lot of kids say that they really enjoyed the walk-ins because they were a lower pressure situation. Knowing that, we might have left a little more open time in her schedule for her to explore different schools. My daughter found that auditioning 5 days in a row, and being in a building full of theatre kids (with early morning vocal warm-ups in the rooms!) was tiring. If we could have afforded the time and travel costs, I think splitting it up over different weekends would have worked better for her and given her time to adjust if she thought it wasn’t going well.

Hope this helps some other student or parent navigate Unifieds.
