If they want to increase viewership, they have to dumb it down. The average American sports fan probably doesn’t know much of anything about the game because they’ve had no exposure to it. They don’t understand it, so the commentators have to explain even the obvious. For example, the average American football fan would probably be screaming at the tv that their going the wrong way when defenders pass back to the goalkeeper, but an educated football fan would know that it can be a safe strategy to prevent the other side from stealing the ball deep in their territory.

Maybe I’m not giving enough credit to American fans, but the game is (very incorrectly) thought of by some Americans as glorified kickball.

Perhaps. But they need to find a way to do it without driving away the more experienced fans.

It is possible to be a commentator who can educate those new to the game without seeming/being new to the game himself.

A quality commentator can, yes, but when has ESPN ever had quality commentators in any sport?

I actually think it would be nice if they brought in some guys from the BBC for the big matches, but it’s not going to happen unfortunately.

It’s not {i]that* bad. What really annoys me is how ESPN deals with the highlights, they only show the goals and every anchor always tries to sound like a die hard soccer fan–only to fail miserably.

Over-exaggeration

That’s my point. I wish they would do that.

I’m watching the 2007 Gold Cup semifinal on FSC right now. Canada was robbed.

Obviously, I was just using hyperbole to get my point across. A more realistic example would be the rules regarding offsides.

I’m ****ed. The US had the game won and let it get away.

Favorite Teams: Aston Villa FC, USA National Team
Favorite Players: Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonlahor.

hahahahah. Good game by the Americans today. Brazil was just too good.

@redsox2002 : Ashley Young is one of the best players in the world in my opinion. I’m a die hard Liverpool fan. I want Young and either Villa or Eto’o at mereyside. And then a good right back… maybe Rafinha. Then you’ll see Liverpool at the top of the table!

@Lobzz: USA was not expected to compete at all against Brazil, Italy, or Spain, but atleast they won against one of them. I see tremendous improvement in our team, and I think in a few years they will be nasty. Also, I have heard Man City has made a ridiculous offer for Eto’o, but I think he will stay in Barca to be honest.

He won
t stay in Barca.HE will go either in City,or in Chelsea .Etoo won everything with barca - three times the SPL ,2 times the copa del rey,two times the Champions league. He is 28 ,at his prime ,and he will look for other challange .
The USA had an unique chance of winning that game but Brazil was just too good.Lets face it - you had extreeeeeme luck to qualify to the final.
Tonight
s final was a one-team-game .IT was a matter of time before Brazil took the lead

You could be right CR7_RealMadrid.

I said we were not expected to win against those teams, but we still did a good job. Altidore’s goal was good, maybe not Dempsey’s since Sergio Ramos took too long to clear the ball. How did they have extreeeeeme luck to win? USA had a clean-sheet, that does not happen by accident, Spain missed chances, it’s the game of football. Luck always is a factor in football, or in any sport for that matter. Most people knew Brazil would probably win, but we were hoping that the USA could pull it off, what can we do, us USA fans want our country to win.

I think it’s fair to say after this performance that the US should make it out of the group stage of the World Cup. It doesn’t mean much more than that, though.

^^^ LMFAOLMFAOLMFAO
CR7_REALMADRID ■■■■■
im sorry, that was probably the funniest, wittiest thing ive read all day.

btw, yes, you need luck to win a game, but its not luck if you make it to the final. thats just a way for people to avoid admitting that the team is in good form.
as much as i hate the US, i thought that they played great.

i agree. but how funny would it be if the US won the world cup? mind you though, they won win it, because obviously germany is winning the whole thing. lmfaoo (yn)

Germany is nasty LiverpoolFC-YNWA, they could certainly win it all. I am just so excited for the World Cup, I don’t care who wins, but the atmosphere is great!

I would die. The bandwagon fans would just hurt me so much.

With Capello, I like England’s chances. Obviously the inevitable spate of metatarsal injuries will dampen that optimism, but right now they’re looking good.

how do you not care who winss??

and yeah, germany certaintly could. been a fan of them my whole life :)
