At one of DSs interviews, I wore white pants (it was a summer interview since we were from so far away). I am a Starbucks addict, but I’m also chronically cold. So I turned on the seat heater and we stopped by Starbucks on the way to the school. As I hopped out of the car, my bum felt suddenly cool. Sure enough, my drink had spilled when I had had it between my legs. I had sat in it in my white pants. It looked like I had had diarrhea all in my pants (but at least it smelled better). I tried to pull my shirt down as low as I could. Thanks to it being summer, I had no coat. Let’s just say I did my best to keep my back to the wall the entire time, especially during the tour.
@willmo yup, but I changed that around with my ecs and they start to get more interested and actually impressed, although some interviews just went bad.
On one of our BS visits I wore a pair of shoes with a black rubber wedge sole/heel. The tour was first and as we walked the campus my shoes began to disintegrate. By the time we returned to the admissions office, I was trailing large chunks of black rubber with every step and my shoes were uneven. The AO had a light beige carpet so this was very obvious and very embarrassing.
As I was walking up the stairs to the parent interview, I made a comment about it. The interviewer said that “something similar had happened to his mom.” I don’t know if that was true but it was kind of him to say. Luckily my kid was still admitted
@buuzn03 and @HMom16, :)) You remind me of this one time when GoatDad bought a pair of new slacks for a job interview and during the interview realized that the entire inseam has ripped open, exposing a sightly white flesh to go with a matching white underwear. Nope, he didn’t get that job. :>
On a previous edition of this thread, I think I mentioned the AO who “passed gas” (SBD) during the parent portion of the interview…
@GoatMama I’m not sure if it wouldn’t have been more disturbing if he had gotten the job!!
This past Fall we visited a school that is 3 hours West of where we live. I made our appointment for a Monday morning so we could drive out Sunday night and stay over in prep for the early interview time. That weekend a significant rainstorm moved in that brought flooding rains from West to East. Before we left on Sunday I checked the forecast for OUR area (not thinking of the fact that we were driving 3 hours West) and saw that Monday was forecast for heavy rain and 55 degrees. So, we packed lightweight rain jackets, footwear and umbrellas in preparation for a rainy tour.
Sunday night I drove 3 hours, due West, mostly in heavy rain. Overnight that night the rain moved out of the school’s area, and was replaced with 30 degree temperatures and 25-30 mph winds!! Needless to say our light rain jackets and umbrellas were not going to be much help against the wind chills that they were experiencing that morning. As soon as we got to the school I explained the error I had made in preparing for the weather and asked if our tour guide could keep us inside as much as possible due to the wind chills. The school was not only accommodating, but also offered us their own heavy jackets to tour the campus in that day! I was so embarrassed to have to accept them, but we did and it made all the difference! The tour guide did adjust our tour (we had been there once before anyway) and we ended up having a great day there. I learned after that to do a better job of checking the forecast at our intended location, rather than our home location.
We went on a campus tour this summer where we were the only visitors . The campus was empty and we were the only family scheduled. We soon learned why , as the septic system for the Admissions building was being dug up and replaced …Golfkid still thought the school was great!
The best and craziest visit was to a smaller school. As we drove into the Admissions parking lot, we saw 3 or 4 students smoking “small” cigarettes- - DH looked at me and said “ let’s blow this joint- no pun intended” :-?
My son will never let me forget our lunch at the end of an open house at one of the schools we visited. They had students and faculty mixing with the families at lunch, and being a boys’ school, they were all in their most formal dress – grey slacks and blue blazers. I asked the young man at our table what grade he was in…and it turned out he was an English teacher! I swear, he looked about 18 or 19.
@CTMom21 That’s funny…similar story: At my daughters’ high school graduation luncheon, we were sitting with other families. My brother asked one of the men at the table where he was going to college - turns out he was another student’s Dad :))
I hope they took that as a compliment!
@Golfgr8 I want to know the name of the small school with kids audacious enough to smoke small cigarettes in front of prospective families!
Let’s not forget orientation this fall when DD, who kept swearing she wasn’t sick and “just wasn’t hungry” waited until the middle of the seated lunch for new families to throw up all over the table in the dining hall. Yep…we were that family. Welcome to St Mark’s!!! Center table with over 100 surrounding people trying to enjoy their food. Sigh.
@buuzn03, that’s an all-time classic! No fun at the time, but a great story forever.
During the parent portion of an interview, I mentioned my cousin (not by name, just said “my cousin”) had gone to the school, and had very happy memories of his time there. The AO leaned forward, narrowed his eyes and said, “John Lastname? ‘95? Oh, I remember him VERY well. I’m surprised you’d want to draw attention to your son being a relative of his…”. After a long, awkward pause, I said something like, “Well, we had heard such great things, my son wanted to visit. I really appreciate your time today!” and left as fast as I could.
When I asked my cousin about it, he laughed and said the AO had HATED him - he had been his coach and dorm parent and they had never gotten along. Luckily, my son didn’t like the school, so didn’t even end up applying.
@momof3nyc That’s awesome! I don’t think that the AO can’t hold that against your child though… probably a good thing you didn’t apply.
I was so nervous that I threw up all over the huge oriental rug covering the floor of the admissions office.
@cababe97 that’s awful!!! Did you get accepted there?
I have many of these! In one of my interviews (Kent), I was demonstrating an app that I had coded. It was basically a game involving basketballs and a bomb. Turns out while I was explaining the game the AO constantly misheard bomb for bum, and so I was scared when she made a confused face. Anyway later I realized and clarified, we both laughed so I think it was fine.
Another one was at SPS. Before the interview, I had gotten myself a hot chocolate, and taken a few sips. It seemed lukewarm, so I didn’t worry about it’s temperature. Fast forward a few minutes to when the AO comes, he tells me to follow him to my office. I thought I’ll take one last sip before going in, and since I liked it and it didn’t seem hot, I took a massive gulp. Turns out it was only lukewarm because I had drank the foamy part on top, and this gulp was BURNING HOT!! By the time we reached his office, my eyes were watering like crazy, and it looked like I was crying. I tried to casually blink and stuff but it wasn’t hard to talk with a burnt mouth for the first few minutes. Anyway, I don’t think he noticed. At least I hope so!
Third one was also at SPS (I think), where it was very snowy, and the paths weren’t paved at all. My mom was wearing leather shoes and so during the tour, she fell over twice. Both times completely into the snow. By the time we were back in the building, she wasn’t completely soaked.
