hey

anyone got an idea if they are gonna use the waitlist or not??

hey

anyone got an idea if they are gonna use the waitlist or not??

I called this morning before school, and the lady said that they are still processing the replies. We have to wait a little bit more.

In Today, Dartmouth online:

Despite a much larger and more competitive applicant pool for the Class of 2009 and a record-low acceptance rate, the College received good news when student decision letters arrived last week. Preliminary numbers show the College's yield to be higher than last year's, as Dartmouth received favorable responses from 1,084 of the 2,150 accepted students.

The responses leave Dartmouth with a yield rate of 50.4 percent. This year's yield, which represents the percentage of accepted students who choose to attend, increased slightly from last year. The large jump in applicants combined with a highly competitive applicant class had created some worries about a drop in the yield rate, but ultimately the percentage remained essentially unchanged.

Looks like the class of 09 is going to be larger than 08 (1070)

Does this mean that they probably won't use the waitlist?

AGHHHHHHHHHHHHH kldjfahlsjkdfoai73092814kljdfnh,knaa;sldkfjalskdjfhksdfh NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

okay, overreacted maybe...no, didn't overreact. THIS SUCKS

I expect they will end up taking roughly as many from the WL as they did last year (24), for a Class of 2008 that wound up as 1,077.

The eventual "melt" of 25-30 will decree this result.

what's a "melt"?

I think it's the students who have said they'll go, but decide not to over the summer because of getting accepted off the waitlist at other universities.

That, and also a few people who may change their plans for other reasons; ie, health, family crisis, etc.

And a few (I've heard around 6-7) whose senioritis will result in Dartmouth rescinding their admissions.

So does this mean that we have to wait longer? If someone's plans change during the summer, does that mean that we have to wait during the summer?

The "action" pretty much dies down by the end of June, when all the musical chairs-style jumping around by people coming of the waitlist at school A to open up at school B for somebody from their waitlist etc.

The number of slots filled in August, if any, will be very small indeed. They might even let any vacancies go unfilled.

hmmmm.....off to midd

they rescind 6-7 admissions per year? how bad did the grades of these kids drop?

how many people accept places on the wait list?

Taurustorus, ChrisCuber -- the following are pages from A is for Admission, a book by a former Dartmouth admissions officer about the process. This chapter is on rescinding admissions for senior grades.

how many people are on the wait list this year

realistically...waitlisted applicants are looking at a 3% shot of acceptance off the waitlist.

What I've heard so far (from Andover's college counseling office, if that makes it any more credible) is that Dartmouth will take very very few from the waitlist this year and those few lucky ones will be "selective" admits, including faculty kids and the like.

No reason to give up hope, though. No harm in staying on the summer waitlist if you've really got your heart set.

i was also under the impression that those selective few would be minorities or athletes to fill any "needs" for a particular student...is that true?
